**What can I expect to do in this role?**: The Wildlife Research & Monitoring Section (WRMS) of Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry in Peterborough is involved in all aspects of wildlife research. The city of Peterborough and surroundings offer a full range of facilities, amenities and services, retail stores, community centers, sports arenas, and outdoor activities. Housing is available for sale or rent.

Working with a wildlife research scientist on research activities including canid and large mammal ecology,, the intern will contribute to wildlife research and monitoring initiatives by by conducting field work to collect research and monitoring data, managing data, performing statistical analyses and modelling, writing scientific reports and providing written and oral briefings to scientists, partners, and senior managers, and reviewing published literature.

**How do I qualify?**:
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:** Technical Knowledge**:

- Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of the management of wildlife populations and habitat; population and habitat ecology of terrestrial vertebrate wildlife species; forest ecology and management; knowledge of survey design, field sampling methods and techniques associated with monitoring the status and trends of wildlife populations and habitat.
- Knowledge of telemetry techniques and analysis of animal location and activity data.
- Knowledge of sound data management principles to manage, process and analyse scientific data.
- Knowledge of statistical methods and tools, and the interpretation of analytical outputs to support monitoring and research objectives using wildlife population and habitat data to perform statistical analysis and geospatial analysis.
- Knowledge of safe working practices in field and laboratory settings and worker responsibilities under the OH&S Act.

**Analytical and Research Skills**:

- Analytical skills and experience conducting quantitative analysis of ecological data, including statistical and spatial analyses and modelling.
- Experience writing scientific papers and/or reports for publication.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal, skills to manage multiple projects, solve problems, and work with other staff and partners.
- Project management skills to develop project terms of reference and establish and meet required deliverables
- Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently with periodic direction.

**Computer Skills**
- Experience using databases to enter, manage, query, and manipulate data, including experience working with GPS radio collar (telemetry) data and population survey data.

**Additional Requirements**
- Valid Class G Driver's Licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
- Ability to travel to remote field locations frequently and for multiple days.
- Physical ability to handle heavy equipment and work under adverse weather conditions.

**Eligibility**:

- Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
- Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years;
- Are not a permanent employee in the OPS.
