Food Safety and Quality Assurance Manager

Food Safety and Quality Assurance Manager is on the on-site food safety and regulatory authority at the Reitzel Place processing facility, the Kitchener cold storage facility and any additional or replacement facilities. The position has the primary responsibility of driving the food safety systems of the facilities by developing, modifying, and maintaining the company’s food safety and regulatory programs to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements for the production of safe and wholesome food.
Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory Programs (“**FSQRP**”) consist of:
- Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (“**HACCP**”);
- Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (“**SSOP**”);
- Standard Operating Procedure (“**SOP**”)
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“**CFIA**”);
- Food Safety Enhancement Program (“**FSEP**”);
- Safe Food For Canadians Regulations **(“SFCR”);**:
- Global Food Safety Initiative (“**GFSI**”);
- British Retail Consortium (“**BRC**”);
- United States Department of Agriculture (“**USDA**”); and
- Good Manufacturing Practices (“**GMP**”).
**Responsibilities**:
- Understand and enforce to all relevant and appropriate requirements of the FSQRP and all relevant related legislation.
- Perform risk assessments of each process and develop the critical control points (“**CCP**”) that will be monitored to assure the production of safe and wholesome food products.
- Lead the plant HACCP team and train the employees in the monitoring and verifying the CCPs.
- Develop, deploy and maintain a complete SSOP program to ensure the plant is maintained in a sanitary condition at all times.
- Develop and maintain the scientific documentation to support the decision making process that occurs during the risk assessment.
- Develop the methods and procedures to become cognizant of changes in the regulatory environment so the plant can remain on the leading edge of issues.
- Manage the CFIA plant relations and act as the plant liaison to resolve all CFIA issues or concerns.
- Respond to and resolve all Corrective Action Requests (“**CAR**”) and Item Requiring Correction (“**IRC**”) notations from the CFIA in a complete and timely manner. Appeal any CAR or IRC that is inaccurate or incomplete. Ensure corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
- Implementation and control of all FSQRP related records in compliance with all relevant guidelines and legislation.
- Develop implement and monitor quality initiatives that ensure strict quality standards are met or exceeded.
- Develop, in concert with the management team, a culture where FSQRP principles are appreciated, understood and strictly adhered to.
- Accuracy of labels and compliance with labelling laws and regulations;
- Conducting inspections of plant and procedures and communicating the results;
- Review of production records entry & control.
- Develop, implement and maintain procedures to manage customer and consumer complaints.
- Respond to and manage customer and consumer complaints in conjunction with Sales and Plant and executive management.
- Management of Food Safety and Quality Assurance staff.
- Participation in Management of the Plant, including participation in team decision making.
- Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**:
- At least 5 years’ experience as quality assurance manager of a BRC certified and CFIA regulated packaged processed meat production facility with preference given to sausage making and RTE (ready to eat) experience;
- Demonstrated management of food quality and food safety protocols consistent with highest industry performance.
- Experience in automated/robotic production methods in processed meat manufacturing
- Post-secondary education relevant to the food industry, food science, food safety or some academic equivalency;
