**Job Posting - Women's Support Counsellor (Relief)**

The Third Place Transition House, a non profit organization, operating since 1989, provides safe supportive short term shelter to women and children fleeing violence and abuse. The shelter is staffed 24-7 and maintains a crisis line. Staff endeavor to help women and children understand the nature of abusive relationships and seek to empower women so as to provide them with the tools and techniques to make sustained changes in their lives. Our philosophy is that healthy relationships make for healthier families, and healthy relationships are possible for all.

**Position: Casual/Relief Roster**.

**Association**: Colchester East Hants Transition House Association (Third Place Transition House)

All applicants must be knowledgeable of the issues, concerns and struggles facing abused women and their children; they must clearly understand the cycle of violence, the extent and prevalence of violence against women and children.

Under the Direction of the Executive Director, Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

- Responding to crisis calls and visits, assessing situations for safety and safety planning, processing admissions to the shelter, needs assessment, intake, case management/action planning,
- Providing a non judgmental supportive environment to promote growth and empowerment,
- Recording information and maintenance of client files, daily log, call sheets, and filing,
- Establish rapport, trust, and responding with empathy when working with clients
- Model and encourage a feminist perspective and demonstrating knowledge of women’s issues;
- Connecting women and their children to relevant community resources,
- Transportation of clients to appointments, court, legal aid etc.,
- Preparing bedrooms, household tasks, purchasing and storing supplies as needed,
- Conduct safety checks of shelter, room checks, weekly resident meetings,
- Community liaisons/referrals, advocacy
- Other assigned duties.
- Have a strong work ethic
- Have a complete understanding of personal and professional boundaries
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
- Be able to work with women and children with empathy in a non judgmental manner
- Thoroughly understand the maintenance of the strictest confidentiality
- Possess good conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
- Have an awareness that your role in assisting women and children is to empower women
- Be able to assess situations for safety objectively and respond appropriately
- Be able to work as part of a team and also independently
- Be flexible to adapt to fast paced environment
- Possess the ability to multi-task
- Possess some computer skill, office management, related duties
- Posses valid driver license, reliable adequately insured vehicle, an up to date Child Abuse Registry and Criminals Records Check.
- Be able to work days, nights, weekends and holidays

**Job Type**: Casual

**Salary**: From $20.00 per hour

Schedule:

- 12 hour shift
- Day shift
- Evening shift
- Holidays
- Night shift
- Weekends as needed

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Truro, NS: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

**Education**:

- AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)

Shift availability:

- Day Shift (required)

- Overnight Shift (required)

Work Location: In person
