**Work Arrangements**
- This temporary, part-time on-call position is available starting September 1, 2023. The position is located at the New Westminster campus and at the Coquitlam campus. Travel between campuses may be required. Work shifts generally take place between 8:30 AM and 8 PM, Monday to Friday as per the lab schedules set each semester. Scheduled hours range between 4 hours to 7 hours per day, depending on the assignment. The number of hours per semester differ based on course offerings and demand. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department’s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work and overtime may be required.**What Douglas Offers**

**The Role**
- Facilitate student engagement in oral/aural and/or reading/writing learning activities to supplement instruction in English Language Learning and Acquisition (ELLA) courses. Activities may occur in a classroom, language lab or experiential settings, on or off campus.**Responsibilities**

**Facilitate student engagement in lab-based learning activities (conversational and/or writing, as appropriate)**:
a. Review weekly lab lesson plans prepared by course instructor(s) to familiarize self with proposed learning activities and instructions
b. Complete any necessary preparation for these learning activities, including equipment set up.
c. Lead learning activities in classroom, lab or experiential (on
- or off-campus) setting, as appropriate
d. As appropriate, in a conversational lab setting,
- initiate, model, demonstrate and direct conversation to encourage student participation in speaking and listening activities, while covering instructor materials and meeting the objectives for the lesson, and
- answer student questions directly related to conversational activities (i.e., clarify instructions, demonstrate correct pronunciation, explain vocabulary and provide cultural awareness or culturally appropriate behaviours)
- e. As appropriate, in a writing lab setting,
- initiate and direct writing practice to encourage student engagement with instructor-designed materials and activities, and
- answer student questions directly related to writing activities (i.e., clarify instructions, explain vocabulary or suggest formatting choices)
- f. Refer student questions about grammar and linguistic functions to instructor(s)
g. Correct student vocabulary or grammar errors according to instructor materials, and/or refer students to appropriate study resources / reference materials

**2. Facilitate student engagement in experiential learning activities**:
a. Review weekly experiential activity lesson plans prepared by course instructor(s) to familiarize self with proposed learning activities, instructions and any resource needs
b. Prepare learning resources and plan activities/outings to match learning activities
c. Co-ordinate learning activity logistics and convey expectations clearly to students
d. Organize and co-ordinate student volunteers and visits, actors and/or guest lecturers
e. Complete necessary forms for field trips and excursions off campus
f. Answer student questions directly related to experiential activities (i.e., clarify instructions, timelines, associated costs, if any, and resulting assignments/outcomes)

**3. Collaborate with instructor(s) for assessment of student performance in labs**:
a. Record student attendance and punctuality
b. Liaise regularly with instructor(s), to discuss lesson plans and expectations, and to note any issues with learning lab activities (e.g., level of difficulty, time/pacing, etc.)
c. Provide instructor(s) regular feedback on student participation in, engagement with and comprehension of learning activities in conversational and/or experiential settings, as appropriate

e. Identify and contribute new materials or activity ideas for inclusion in future lab lessons, as requested and as time permits

**4. Perform other related duties**:
a. Provide web links and contact information required for students to complete their tasks
b. Maintain current contact lists for students/classes

d. Update and organize supplies and learning resources for activities and labs, including websites, contacts for excursions, maps for outings, etc.
e. Organize and maintain electronic files and records of learning resources on the shared College network
f. Submit a brief final report on each learning lab to the appropriate instructor, with a copy to the program Coordinator, identifying overall success and/or limitations/challenges with the students and lab (report template provided)
g. Perform other duties as directed
