**Responsibilities**:
The Laboratory Supervisor is part of a team that is responsible for the undergraduate laboratory program in the Department of Chemistry. The role provides technical support for laboratory courses in the department, as directed by the Laboratory Manager including preparing and maintaining the laboratory space and equipment needed and supplying the needed materials (chemicals, solutions, etc.) for laboratory sessions. The Laboratory Supervisor provides support to Teaching Assistants during laboratory sessions including providing guidance, training and support with respect to their duties in the teaching lab. The role assists students during laboratory sessions, maintains course records and manuals, prepares the laboratory for student experiments, and prepares evaluation materials. The Laboratory Supervisor also administers courses in terms of scheduling, enrolment, student placement and online management.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- 4 year University Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry

**Experience**:

- 4 years’ experience (may be from post-secondary education) providing team supervision, developing protocols, and ensuring safety in a chemical laboratory/educational environment
- Experience supervising students and teaching assistants in a chemical laboratory environment is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- In depth knowledge of common laboratory practices, safe handling procedures, WHMIS and MSDS
- Knowledge of methods for research design, implementation, and analysis and with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and analyses
- Ability to provide training and guidance to employees to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the team
- Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
- Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
- Critical thinking skills to analyze problems, and collect information required to make an accurate conclusion
- Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
- Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize data
- Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Ability to prepare, setup and deploy teaching labs according to schedule and instructions
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues with lab preparation, set-up and clean-up
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to research preferred
