Job Summary:
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of British Columbia will be hiring a Research Associate at 100% FTE to join the laboratory of Dr. Natalie Strynadka. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
For more than fifty years, the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology has played an active and important role at UBC and in the greater scientific community. The Department is home to approximately 90 research laboratories from fifteen Departments organized into nine research clusters, fostering a strong foundation for innovation and collaborations. All members of the Department maintain active, well-funded research programs that encompass many areas of modern biochemistry, and molecular and structural biology. The Department hosts an active Graduate program with more than 90 students and offers over fifteen undergraduate courses and laboratory courses for honours, major and minor Undergraduate programs.
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is mainly located in the Life Science Institute (LSI) in Vancouver, BC. A number of research faculty, however, are dispersed at different locations, such as, Michael Smith Labs and BCCHR, and the teaching stream are based in the Biological Sciences Building at the Point Grey Campus. The Biological Sciences Building is a hub for Science Undergraduate teaching and students, housing a number of Departments such as the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Botany, Cellular & Physiological Sciences, and Zoology. All members of the Departments maintain their lab teaching activities at this new site.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Working as part of an existing team in operation of the High Resolution Macromolecular Electron Microscopy general user facility (HRMEM) housed within the LSI at UBC.
- Responsible to help operate the 300 keV Titan Krios, 200 keV Glacios and Talos120 microscopes for users, including sample preparation, cryo-vitrification, clipping and loading, use of data collection and data analysis software (EPU, SerialEM, Relion, CryoSparc, and various tomography software) working with users to collect their cryoEM, cryoET and negative stain EM data.
- Knowledge and prior experience in cryoCLEM and focused ion beam milling SEM an asset.
- Contributions to ongoing documentation and reporting including usage, SOP development and infrastructure oversight are expected.
- Execution and documentation of routine maintenance duties of the facility infrastructure are also expected.
- Ability to work constructively with a broad user pool including training of general users of all levels of ability is expected.
- Contributions to academic and industry projects, including data processing, is expected as needed.
- Use of iLab and oversight of billing and interaction with the billing clerk, ongoing interaction and communication with the ThermoFisher and SFR designate engineers on microscope repair and function.
