BHO’s mandate is to advance education by increasing the public’s knowledge and appreciation of, and carrying out research in the history, culture, traditions and achievements of Canadians of African descent. Through our initiatives, we serve the community by developing and offering programs, open to the public, which focus on areas such as mentorship, youth leadership and health.
Position Summary
The Youth Facilitator's role is to establish a secure and affirming space that fosters a sense of belonging and positive integration for Black newcomer youth aged 13 to 19. In addition, the Youth Facilitator will provide one-on-one support, create community networks, and organize activities to enhance awareness of and access to Canadian cultural knowledge specifically tailored to Black immigrant youth.
Main Responsibilities:
**Services to Clients**
- Work collaboratively with Black History Ottawa (BHO) and OCISO to deliver culturally sensitive programming
- Develop and lead weekly support groups virtually and in person in schools and community settings.
- Provide guidance, information, and orientation for Black immigrant and refugee youth, connecting them to relevant resources.
- Offer orientation about Ontario Education to Black immigrant and refugee students.
- Design welcoming, friendship, and educational activities for Black newcomer youth.
- Provide positive role modelling for program participants and volunteers.
- Deliver Life Skills training workshops to facilitate access to volunteer, employment, and networking opportunities.
- Raise awareness on multicultural issues specific to Black communities.
- Develop and present cross-cultural education workshops tailored to the experiences of Black immigrant youth.
- Advocate on behalf of clients and support schools in developing cultural proficiency related to Black immigrant communities.
- Adhere to BHO and OCISO's mission, values, personnel policies, and YOCISO program best practices.
- Keep informed about settlement sector information, policies, and regulations.
- Inform and consult with the Manager of Youth Services on direct practice issues.
- Participate in committees, workshops, and conferences.
- Address crises in consultation with the Manager.
- Perform other tasks assigned by the Program Manager.
**Qualifications**:
- Post-secondary education in social sciences fields or equivalent experience
- Minimum 2 years experience in youth programming, particularly youth skills development training
- Knowledge of issues and opportunities surrounding newcomer youth.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of youth in a sensitive, respectful and non-judgmental manner.
- Ability to coach, encourage, guide, and motivate others.
- Skilled in workshop facilitation and presentations to newcomer youth
- Experience working with children and youth in a leadership role
- Be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and responsible individual
- Commitment to OCISO Values - honesty, caring, respect and responsibility

- First Aid and CPR certification is required
- A satisfactory Criminal Reference Check is required
**Salary & Benefits**: $29,952 annually. Comprehensive benefits plan including health, dental, RRSP plan, and generous leave entitlement.
