The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

Corporate Law Clerk

Employment Status: Fulltime

Position Location: Toronto Head Office - 22 St. Clair Avenue East

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Legal Services, the Corporate Law Clerk supports the Legal, Real Estate and Board Secretariat Department. Support will be provided to the Legal team in relation to preparing and reviewing contracts, assembling, and organizing information for legal documents; conducting legal research; assembling materials for legal, regulatory, litigation and administrative tasks. The Corporate Law Clerk will provide support to the Board Secretary and Manager, Board Services regarding all Board of Directors meetings and to the Real Estate team in relation to realty transactions (including acquisitions, dispositions, and leasing) and property management.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide administrative support to the Vice President & General Counsel & Board Secretary, and to the Director, Legal Services and in-house lawyers in relation to preparing and reviewing contracts and assembling confidential material.
- Conduct legal research and analysis, including tracking case law developments.
- Review written legal advice, contracts, internal and external reports.
- Organize files and documents by collecting, assembling and summarizing information and reports.
- Manage, input, file and track all legal documentation into a legal records management database.
- Perform administrative support functions including preparing and editing presentations, meeting materials, general correspondences, reports, spreadsheets and special task documentation, attend meetings with various stakeholders and prepare minutes of meetings as may be required.
- Track the legal department budget including tracking legal expenses. Review legal invoices as received and manage expenses of department.
- Review, research and gather information for disciplinary and labour relations matters including assisting with bargaining minutes as required.
- Provide support to Board Secretary and Manager, Board Services regarding preparation and management of all Board of Directors and Advisory Council meetings.
- Provide support to the Real Estate team regarding realty transactions including acquisitions, dispositions and leasing, and the management of properties including maintaining databases and calendars for all key dates and obligations relating to the management of NWMO’s property.
- Act as a liaison, provide information and maintain good working relationships with external law firms and real estate consultancies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Education:

- College Diploma in an accredited Legal Administration Program, i.e., Completion of Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) certification, or equivalent.
- Member in good standing with the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario an asset.

Minimum Experience:

- Five (5) years’ experience.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing contracts.
- Experience working with Board portals (e.g. Diligent) would be an asset.
- Outstanding attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

- This position requires occasional extended hours.
- Extended periods of time sitting at desk.
