Overview:
**Key Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Develop and deliver age-appropriate programming.
- Supervise, guide, and assist children in daily activities.
- Provide a safe and happy environment.
- Record necessary information pertinent to each child.
- Ensure activities adhere to the safety and well being of each child.
- Maintain equipment and assist in housekeeping duties.
- Observe children to detect signs of ill health or emotional disturbance, and to evaluate progress.
- Interact with children to encourage their involvement in activities.
- Provide a warm, safe, and caring environment that is kept orderly, clean, and appealing.
- Co-plan and implement daily activities (indoor/outdoor) as they relate to the overall goals of the program.
- Provide diapering care if required.
- Provide overall supervision of toileting and bathroom time.
- Oversee all infant feedings and mealtime/snack time activities, and provide related record keeping (if required).
- Work with an ECE to maintain ongoing developmental records for each child, including keeping records of all developing skills (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive).
- Assist with the keeping of a "portfolio" of each child's progress, including samples of their artwork, writing, etc.
- Maintain good communication with parents on a daily basis through the use of daily sheets, notes and/or verbally.
- Work with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
- Ensure confidentiality of privileged information.
- Maintain adherence to Wahta Mohawks policies and procedures, including safety requirements.
- Create a play space environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students with an emphasis on culture and language development and emergent literacy skills, using the Kanien’keháka language as much as possible.
- Provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the development levels of the children.
- Model developmentally appropriate activities and positive behaviour management techniques through daily contact with children and early childhood staff in the classroom.
- Select books, equipment and other instructional materials appropriate for the early childhood program.
- Include materials and experiences in the classroom that are culturally appropriate and represent the Kanien’keháka culture.
- Maintain attendance records of children participating in the program.
- Participate in team planning sessions with all project staff to ensure well-coordinated and effective delivery of project services to meet program objectives.
- Work cooperatively and effectively as a team member by communicating and contributing information on a continuous basis.
- Maintain open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child's family and encourage their involvement in the program.
- Be sensitive to individual children's differences and needs, and be willing to adjust the program to meet those individual needs.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of current child development practices.
- Demonstrate behaviour that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Assist with other duties as requested to include sharing the responsibility of snack and lunch preparation.

**Education and Experience Requirements**:

- Preference of College Certificate in human services field including: Early Childhood Education (ECE). Education Assistant (EA), etc. or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar or related position with a proven demonstration of skills.
- Related training in the area of children with special needs and/or Under 3 Training preferred.

**Skills Required**:

- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Must be reliable and dependable, and committed to maintaining confidentiality.
- Must have the ability to work in and contribute to a team environment.
- Must have a proficient level of communication skills, verbal and written, and be comfortable dealing with the public.
- Ability to effectively interact and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner.
- High level of energy and patience.
- Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks.
- Ability to recognize individual learning styles and the characteristics of leaners.
- Experience working in a First Nation environment is an asset.
- Knowledge in Kanien’keháka culture and history is an asset.
- Must posses a current and valid Driver's License and dependable vehicle.

**Terms of Employment**:
There is (1) six-month temporary full-time position. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience.
