**JOB SUMMARY**:
Under the leadership of the Manager of the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) team, the OHS Specialist role plans, develops and implements Occupational Health and Safety Programs for Lakeridge Health. Examples of these programs include Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention (Ergonomics), Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Hazardous Materials, WHMIS, Contractor Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Slips/Trips/Falls Prevention, Sharps Injury Prevention, and Occupational Hygiene (air quality, mould, heat stress, cold stress, radiation, lighting and noise). This role also contributes to safety incident review and follow-up, the provision of training/education, OHS Safety policy and procedure development and review, OHS promotion and recognition, and Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) support.

The role liaises with management, unions, and external bodies, including the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), consultants, vendors, etc. The role will also be required to inform OHS purchasing activities, and participate in MLTSD and WSIB Safety Excellence Program reporting and inspection requirements.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Perform OHS and Occupational Hygiene risk assessments and prepare written reports with recommendations;
- Monitor OHS incidents and support leaders with developing preventive actions when incidents occur;
- Identify the needs of Lakeridge Health team members, patients, visitors, external consultants and contractors, and Program/Clinical Leaders for information, policies, procedures, training and equipment;
- Utilize OHS expertise to recommend policy and procedure changes;
- Provide training and education where needs are identified, ensuring legislative, regulatory or policy requirements are met;
- Seek feedback from program stakeholders on an ongoing basis;
- Perform responsibilities outlined in OHS policies and procedures
- Liaise as needed, with applicable external agencies;
- Support physical inspections of the workplace with program leaders where applicable;
- Document and recommend actions associated with inspection results (e.g. policy/procedure changes, program changes, training, equipment, facilities changes);
- Implement components of the Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (MIPP), including: educating team members on safe techniques and practices for patient handling, ergonomics, or material handling, conducting individual and departmental ergonomics assessments, assisting with the completion of physical demands analyses (PDAs), job hazard analyses (JHAs), and similar assessments, and providing input into the procurement of new equipment/furniture to ensure ergonomic considerations are addressed and potential for injury is mitigated
- Provide support to the JHSCs and Department Safety Representatives (DSRs)
- Provide input and regular updates to the Manager of OHS to: Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and identify the need for program adjustments or redevelopment, set program and departmental goals and objectives related to the above, identify program costs and budget requirements, and identify program quality and effectiveness indicators and evaluation strategies;
- Ensure effective and timely communication across the Lakeridge Health organization occurs in regards to OHS programs;
- Act as liaison with similar organizations to stay current on best/leading practices in healthcare;
- Consult with individuals affected by program implementation and collaborate to minimize negative impacts;
- Other duties as required/assigned

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- College or University graduate in Occupational Health and Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene and/or Ergonomics (and/or a combination of several years of related experience and education)
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation, or similar Health & Safety designation an asset
- 3 years or more experience in an Occupational Health and Safety, Ergonomics and/or Industrial Hygiene role, preferably in a healthcare setting
- Advanced knowledge of legislation and regulations covering Occupational Health and Safety (e.g. OHSA, Healthcare and Residential Facilities Regulation, Designated Substances etc.) and Ergonomics.
- Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Consultation skills;
- Interpretative and investigative skills;
- Must have satisfactory performance record;
