Mental Health Worker

**Job Summary**
As part of our interdisciplinary health care team, the Mental Health Worker's primary role will include assessment, crisis intervention and stabilization, short term therapy, prevention and mental health promotion for patients who are experiencing mental health problems. The Mental Health Worker will also build relationships with outside organizations in order to provide our patients with access to the full range of resources already available in the community.
**Responsibilities and Duties**
- Provide assessment and short-term individual, family or group counseling (6-8 sessions).
- Assess and evaluate the patient's progress, attitude and behaviour and recommend changes to the treatment as indicated to the MD and other team members.
- Refer patients to suitable community resources.
- Assist in the development and coordination of patient and family education.
- Provide motivational support to patients and families regarding long-term behaviour modification.
- Collaborate and consult with all members of the team.
- Participate in team meetings as required to evaluate program effectiveness, and discuss patient cases.
- Contribute to and participate in overall Family Health Team planning.
- Promote health and wellness.
- Maintain confidentiality of personnel and patient information.
**Qualifications and Skills**:
**Computer Skills**
- Basic computer skills (e.g. MS Office)
- Willingness to learn electronic medical record systems (Telus PS Suite)
- Ability to perform internet-based literature searches on electronic databases
**Language Skills**
- English required
**Education and Specific Job Requirements**
- Master of Social Work Degree
- Two or more years’ experience providing counseling services.
- Experience with a variety of treatment modalities with a focus on short-term cognitive behavioural therapy type approaches.
- Strong clinical skills.
- Prepared to develop excellent knowledge of community resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to professional development.
- Able to function with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with all members of the health care team.
- Ability to prioritize, manage time effectively and be flexible in a very active work environment.
**Relevant Experience**
- Experience in consulting and collaborating with members of the medical profession.
- Training in cognitive behaviour or equivalent type therapeutic approaches.
- Experience with crisis / urgent presentations.
- Research experience and skills; presentation and teaching skills.
