**Job Summary**
**WHAT IS AN OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT?** An ophthalmic assistant is a person who works with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists care for patients by taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patients to see the doctor. Their work provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat patients.

Many ophthalmic assistants are trained and learn on the job. You could be a successful ophthalmic assistant if you:
- Have a pleasant personality, are professional with a calm demeanor
- Love helping people
- Have patience and compassion for all patients aged 0-100+ (majority are elderly)
- Are comfortable working in close contact with patients while masked
- Exhibit excellent communication skills
- Consistently provide attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
- Have excellent typing skills
- Are team oriented and collaborative, and demonstrate a willingness to learn
- Adapt well to a high paced office
**A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT**
A typical day in the life of an ophthalmic assistant might include these tasks:
- Taking patient medical/ophthalmic histories
- Explaining medications, tests, and procedures performed in office to patients
- Administer eye drops, ointments and medications as directed by ophthalmologist
- Enter test results and patient notes into Electronic Medical Record on computer
- Assisting ophthalmologists with patient procedures
- Routine office functions including reception, telephone, scheduling appointments, scanning
- Maintaining patient records in a confidential manner
**PERFORMING VARIOUS VISION AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTS - Using specialized equipment ** In office training is provided and these machines are intuitive and easy to learn/operate**
- Visual acuity measurement
- Tonometry (measure eye pressure)
- OCT scans, fundus photography, and topography evaluations
- Visual field testing
- Conducting biometry measurements including A-scan ultrasonography
- LENSTAR measurements for pre-operative patients
Additional duties include interacting with patients, maintaining sensitive ophthalmologic equipment and keeping exam rooms clean and stocked.

**Job Type**: Part-time
15 to 37.5 hours per week, hours will vary week to week.
**Salary**: $17.50-$20.00 per hour. Wage is dependent on experience and qualifications
Schedule:
- 7.5 hours per shift
- Monday to Friday office hours 8:30am-5pm. Schedule will vary week to week.
