- advocating for and providing care to the patient undergoing treatment in the ophthalmology clinic/diagnostic areas.

- communicating with and supporting patients and their families in their involvement and participating in decision making with respect to their vision care;
- facilitating timely and accurate medical records management and ensuring each record contains appropriate documentation as per established policy of medical record content.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will**:
- Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team;
- demonstrate participation in ongoing educational activities that maintains current skills and knowledge;
- participate in the learning experience of health care students as necessary;
- demonstrate initiative in participating in research activities;
- demonstrate skills in computer technology including graphics, database/spreadsheet management, digital imaging and computer slide production;
- possess previous experience working in a fast-paced environment;
- be technical minded with manual dexterity required for finer detail work;
- have the ability to manage patient expectations and concerns;.
- have the ability to deal with multiple tasks, tight timelines and peak busy periods;.
- have the ability to communicate (written and oral skills) in a professional manner with internal and external stakeholders and deal with impacts and issues;
- perform other duties as assigned.
**The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will be competent at the following profession related skills**:
- Provide direct patient care within the ophthalmology clinic;
- perform automated perimetry: providing patient instruction, observation and assistance during procedure;
- perform perimetry: calibration, patient instruction, manually collect accurate details of exam.
- perform work-up and coordinate all clinics: taking medical history, far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, measurement of IOP, pachymetry, instilling eye drops to anesthetise or dilate the eye, dry eye testing;
- perform all colour vision testing: patient instruction, observation, and accurate data collection;
- perform visual field testing;
- perform slit lamp examinations;
- perform ocular coherence tomography;
- perform manual and automated keratometry;
- perform endothelial cell count;
- perform manifest refractometry;
- perform ultrasound A-scan;
- be familiar with the use and perform testing using the IOL Master;
- perform corneal topography;
- set up, operate, and maintain ophthalmic equipment;
- collect and prepare data of all exam results for interpretation by physician;
- troubleshoot common problems with ophthalmic equipment;
- supervise and teach Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant students and ophthalmic medical technologist students within the scope of practice of the Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant;
- stock examination rooms.
**The Ophthalmic Technician/Ophthalmic Assistant will be accountable for**:
- Ensuring confidentiality of all records and information related to patients, physicians and employees;
- following safe working conditions and practices in respective areas of responsibility;
- carrying out duties in a way that embodies the mission and values of the clinic;
- working co-operatively with fellow employees, managers, hospitals, and clinics toward the achievement of the clinic's overall goals and objectives.
**BASIC QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certification is an asset
- Preference will be given to those certified as a COT, however those willing to learn are welcome to apply
- Recent related experience in an ophthalmology setting is an asset
- In-depth knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, procedures and techniques needed to function smoothly and efficiently in a fast paced ophthalmology clinic
- Proficient Computer skills (MAC / Windows / NT)
- Proven good interpersonal and communication skills
- Capable of coping with a mentally and physically demanding work environment
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and upgrading of skills
- Stereo vision capabilities
- Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy
