This role will be performing lab protocols and collecting data in the captive rearing and re-introduction of Mottled Duskywing Butterflies. The Lab Technician will work closely with the other lab technicians, the Jr. Lab Supervisor, the Lab Supervisor, and the Curator & Executive Director and will assist with a diverse assortment of research duties that reflect the immediate needs of the laboratory. Typical daily responsibilities of the Lab Technician include hand feeding adult butterflies, inventorying egg-lay, feeding all life-stages of caterpillars and participating in the general care and maintenance of the captive population.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Work as part of a team on the captive rearing of the endangered Mottled Duskywing Butterfly (Erynnis Martialis) for reintroduction to suitable sites in Ontario.
- Trials to breed butterflies
- Monitoring egg-laying, larval development
- Taking observations of developing larvae
- Provisioning larvae with food plants
- Documenting morphometric characteristics, diapause induction etc
- Data collection and recording observations of butterfly egg-laying, larval development, morphometric characteristics, and diapause regulation while in a captive environment
- Adhering to the experimental design and lab protocols
- Maintaining overall lab cleanliness including cleaning captive rearing enclosures
- Managing host plants (planting, weeding, watering, etc).
- Some time may be spent in the field collecting and/or replacing host plants and butterflies, as well as the placement of the larva in the reintroductions sites
- Other duties to support daily operations and customer service as assigned
- Assist other departments as needed
- Adhere to all Company policies, rules, systems and procedures which are outlined in the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory Employee Handbook, as well as all Health and Safety policies and procedures and safe work practices
**QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS, & SKILLS**
- An interest in or pursuing post-secondary education in science, biology, ecology, conservation, animal husbandry, zoology, or a related field an asset
- Experience working in a lab or conducting research and/or experiments an asset
- Adapt with changing job requirements and goals based on business needs
- Coordinate in a team environment and work with others to achieve shared goals
- Stay organized and manage time, priorities, & deadlines
- Exchange thoughts and information with colleagues and customers through a variety of forms
- Police Background Check (Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check)
- Interest in insects, invertebrates, and plants an asset
**UNIFORM**
Staff are required to wear the appropriate uniform, footwear and safety equipment at all times
**COMPENSATION & BENEFITS**
This is a full-time fixed-term position. The shifts are typically from 9 am to 5 pm on both weekdays and weekends. The rate of pay is $17.50/hour.
