CASUAL YOUTH SUPPORT WORKERS (YES)

Program Description

The Prince Albert Grand Council is currently looking for Casual Youth Support Workers to join the PAGC Urban Youth Services team known as Youth Engagement & Empowerment Strategy (PAGC YES). This service is funded through Jordan’s Principle and is aimed to help build relationships through connecting with Urban Indigenous Youth. Our major goal is to build relationships with urban Indigenous youth who have become disconnected and dysregulated. Towards this objective, PAGC YES focuses on working with the youth to be strong adult role models who will help them learn the skills needed to empower them to learn to be the best they can be and in doing so help them to use their voices to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them. Learning their history, culture and language will instill pride and confidence to be resilient and happy Healing on the land.is another major component. It is our goal to create a sense of belonging as we work towards learning the skills needed to allow them to make good choices for themselves and to give back to the community.

Participants of YES will take part in intensive daily services. YES will use the Medicine Wheel Concept capturing Spiritual, Physical, Social and Mental Well-being of youth between the ages of 11and 18. Focusing on the social context in which hopelessness develops while creating relationships, and interventions that use the family as the primary area of work to build the youth’s and family’s strength. An intensive case management model will be used to service the needs of the youth.

Building relationships through activities

Our services are provided 5 days every week of each year. They include but are not limited to: social skills, kindness, seven grandfathers’ teachings, singing and drumming, dancing, language, hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, canoeing, beading, cadets, swimming, cooking, sewing, woodworking, physical fitness, archery, leadership, teamwork, hiking, medicine picking, music, art and media and life skills.

Experience/Education Requirements:
Participating in a Youth Worker Diploma; Indigenous Studies or other closely related field AND equivalent experience working with youth is required. Connection is why we exist as the youth voice has been lost and we must reconnect and reclaim our youth. The applicant must be motivated to create positive relationships with all youth and build those connections of trust and support. Being a good role model and having the ability to self-regulate is a must. Being able to work independently and support the team is imperative.

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and have a current C-Pic/vulnerable sector check.

Applicant must be willing to work evenings and weekends if required. Programs run from 12-9 daily.

Wilderness First Aid, ASIST, Safe food handling and CPR is an asset and must be certified within first 6 months.
