Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) has an opening for a temporary call-in Library Assistant 2. This temporary call-in opportunity is for a period of April 2024 to March 2025.

This position will include testing as a part of the recruitment process.

**Job description**

The Casual Library Assistant 2’s primary responsibility is to assist with the daily operations of the branch to provide information resources and services to CK communities.

**Essential responsibilities**
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Manage daily circulation processes and procedures
- Provide reader's advisory assistance, reference and research
- Assist with the marketing and promotion of resources and services
- Sort and prepare material for shelving (alphabetical and/or numerical)
- Provide excellent customer service in person, on the phone, and in the community
- Promote a welcoming and inviting library environment
- Actively support a culture of safety for staff and patrons
- Support and connect vulnerable people (including seniors, children, unhoused) and people with complex needs to library resources and services Encourage imagination, inspiration, and creativity, through community and library programming for children, teens, adults and seniors
- Assist the public with library technology through mobile tech devices, as well as in branch services, such as Wi-Fi, computers and photocopier/printers
- Provide information, reading recommendations, and conduct borrowing services including express check out
- Build community connections through in-house branch displays and promotions, as well as outreach opportunities
- Work with and for the CKPL team.
- Assist with refreshed and vibrant collections.

**Essential qualifications**
- Completion of post-secondary education (minimum of two years)
- Public service experience preferred, preferably a public library system
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Awareness of Library resources and services
- Strong organizational skills required
- Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)

**Other qualifications**
- Experience working in a school or other library environment an asset
- Experience working with people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences an asset
- Experience working in a customer service setting an asset (e.g. working in a team environment, providing tours and orientation, face-to-face, and handling complaints)
- Experience organizing and delivering library programs an asset (e.g. preschool/story time; adult focused programs; computer/technical instructions; class visits, etc.)
- Experience with community-based programming an asset; preferably in an educational, recreational or social services environment
- Experience with marketing and promotion of resources and services an asset
- Experience with library circulation processes and procedures, reader's advisory, and reference and research an asset
- Experience in classifying documents (alphabetical, numerical, alphanumerical) an asset
- Experience searching the internet, in order to answer basic queries from library customers is an asset
- Experience with mobile technology, and training customer on mobile technology an asset
- Experience using Library virtual services (e.g. hoopla, Libby/OverDrive) an asset

**Certifications, memberships, licenses**

**Work environment/hours of work**
- This is a casual call-in position with no guaranteed hours
- Casual call-in positions will be required to work at any of the 11 library branches throughout Chatham-Kent.
- This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours

**COVID-19 Vaccination**

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

**Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements**

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.
