Chatham-Kent Public Library has an opening for a temporary part-time Library Assistant 1 at the Chatham Branch. This is a temporary part-time position of 16 hours per week. This position is for a period up to April 2024.

Job description

The Library Assistant 1 is primarily responsible for ensuring that the library collections are returned to their proper location. The position also provides assistance on the circulation desk. This position is also responsible for general clean up duties indoors and outdoors.

Essential responsibilities

Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies

Circulation:
place holds and renew material; register and renew patrons, edit borrower records; collect fines and other payments; check materials in and out; complete or assist patrons in completing interlibrary loan, purchase suggestion and literary angels forms

Process materials:
retrieve holds; empty book drops; retrieve newspapers; prepare courier and rotation bins

Complete daily collection lists:
in transit holds; missing items; lost materials; claims returned; expired holds; dusty lists

Collection maintenance:
assess materials based on condition as they are returned; sort and prepare materials for shelving; shelve and shelf read; repair or jacket material as directed by appropriate librarian

Outreach and Programming:
set up programming space; awareness of library resources and services

Reference services:
provide directional assistance - direct patrons to resource material or location, provide reader's advisory assistance; answer basic reference questions referring questions that cannot be answered to reference services; assist patrons with online catalogue; assist patrons with photocopiers & printers; support and assist patrons with online databases, electronic resources/ internet
Effectively use integrated library systems (ILS)

Assist with patron concerns, routing unresolved issues to Librarian/Manager

Assist with marketing and promotion of resources and services

Handle telephone inquiries in a professional and timely manner, directing patrons to appropriate staff and resources as required
Demonstrate the Library's mission and values through day-to-day activities

Participate in discussions, offer suggestions and input

Participate on project teams as assigned

Contribute to creating an effective team
Actively participate in Municipal and Library training

Essential qualifications

Secondary school diploma or equivalent education (e.g., GED certificate), plus one year of post-secondary education

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Excellent customer service skills

Basic internet searching skills
Proficient in the use of integrated library systems for basic circulation functions

Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)

Other qualifications

Previous library experience, preferably in a public library, an asset

Previous experience working with children an asset

Previous experience in classifying documents (alphabetical, numerical, alphanumerical) an asset

Previous experience in a customer service setting an asset

Certifications, memberships, licenses

EXCEL (SOLS program) certificate or other library related courses an asset

Work environment/hours of work

This position works both indoors and outdoors

This position works weekday hours, with afternoon, evening and weekend hours

Background check requirements

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

Physical stamina, flexibility, good physical health and the ability to lift 11.4 to 15.9 kgs or 25 to 30 lbs are a necessity, as is the ability to stand for extended periods of time, kneel and reach

Bending:
frequent stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, squatting (4.05 to 13.64 kgs or 10 to 30 lbs) (retrieving items, shelving materials, processing materials)

Walking:
constant walking on level surface (movement around library. Processing, shelving material)

Reaching:
frequent reaching above shoulder, below shoulder, forward; constant handling (up to 4.05 kgs or 10 lbs) (reaching for books, binders, supplies; shelving material; circulating/processing material)

Lifting:
frequent lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder, carrying, transferring (up to 9.09 kgs or 20 lbs) (placing books on shelf or cart; pushing/bulling book cart; lifting book bin; shelving material; retrieving material/supplies; pushing/pulling for circulation process)

Standing:
frequent standing inside (working at circulation desk; work outside/outreach)

Hands:
frequent pinching; frequent fine finger dexterity, gripping, pinching, mousing; (up to 4.05 kgs or 10 lbs) (keyboarding, lifting books or other papers; circulation; features on the computer)

Benefits:


This temporary part-time position will receive 15% in-lieu of benefits upon completion of a 300 working hours probationary period, as per the CUPE 12.
