The National Judicial Institute (NJI) is an independent, bilingual, not‐for‐profit organization, based in Ottawa and Montreal, with a mandate to coordinate and deliver educational programming to members of the judiciary across Canada.

Since its inception in 1988, the NJI has continued to develop and deliver stimulating programs and a variety of digital resources that foster judicial excellence. These resources include Judicial Education Guides, Electronic Bench Books, educational modules to assist in program design, and an online judicial library. As part of its curriculum, the NJI offers over 70 judicial education programs each year. Alone or in partnership with courts and other organizations, the NJI is involved in the delivery of the majority of education taken by judges in Canada.
The NJI is looking to fill the permanent position of Jurilinguist to support our Communications team. The position is full-time and based in Ottawa.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Jurilinguist is responsible for ensuring NJI publications use terminology and syntax appropriate to Canadian Common and Civil Law, legal procedures and the judicial context, in both official languages. The Jurilinguist will assist the Institute in ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and style of the NJI’s communications and products in both French and English.

**Specific responsibilities include**:
Translation, Review, and Editing
2. Ensure agreement of both the French and English language versions, and provide guidance on legal and linguistic aspects including the standardization of legal terminology across products;
3. Exercise specialized skills in detecting and correcting errors in style, spelling, grammar, logic, structure and substance, proofreading and correcting external translations and other resources as assigned;
4. Verify hyperlinks and check references in French language communications; and
5. Draft and maintain the NJI French Language reference Guide.
In-house Translation
1. Provide in-house translation services for NJI products and communications (program materials, correspondence from the Chief Judicial Officer, web content etc.);
2. Provide in-house translation services for NJI internal documents (Annual reports, Board of Governors publications etc.); and
3. Assist and collaborate with NJI staff in the drafting of French language communications.
Communications Support
1. Provide guidance and support to the Translations Coordinator when requested by the Director of Operations;
2. Coordinate translation for special projects as assigned; and
3. Assist with other Communications and administrative projects as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
1. Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal education;
2. Membership at the Bar;
3. Minimum of 5 years experience including, but not limited to, translations, editing, proofreading, administrative support or publishing support;
4. Fluently bilingual with comprehensive knowledge of both the English and French languages, and subtleties in linguistics, grammar, syntax, etc;
5. Comprehensive knowledge of the concepts and principles of jurilinguistics, including notions linked to legal terminology, grammar, lexicology, linguistics, and stylistics;
6. Legal translation certification; and
7. Proficiency with Office 365 and SharePoint.
Desirable
1. Civil Law Degree (B.C.L.); and
2. Experience in working in a judicial environment.
