Housing Access Worker

**Full-time 6-month contract: Oct 1, 2024 - March 31, 2025 -Monday to Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm (Possibility of contract extension pending funding)**
**Reports to: Housing Services Manager**
**Location: Primarily from Bradford office, with travel to Innisfil, Essa, and Cookstown for community outreach. Some travel to other areas of South Simcoe as needed.**
**Mileage provided at the Agency policy rate**
**AGENCY OVERVIEW**:
CONTACT Community Services is a not-for profit registered charity that has a long-standing history of taking a proactive approach to changing social needs in South Simcoe. Our services include: Community support programs, employment, housing and volunteer services. Our community thrift store, The Clothes Line, offers gently recycled clothing and household goods and provides support to families and individuals in need.
**POSITION OVERVIEW**:
The HAW at CONTACT also plays an active role in community advocacy related to homelessness and their work feeds into greater efforts to raise awareness and supports for persons experiencing homelessness in the South Simcoe catchment area. The HAW is also responsible for working with the Executive team to develop relevant departmental materials and contribute to the planning and development of affordable housing.
**DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to)**:
- Maintaining a caseload of individuals and families who require assistance in obtaining and maintaining adequate housing;
- Meeting with clients in their preferred location (remotely or BWG or Alliston offices);
- Work in the community at various locations throughout South Simcoe;
- Advocating to landlords on behalf of clients requiring housing, as needed and with the support of the Housing Specialist;
- Providing training in budgeting, household management, social skills, and other skills necessary to maintain adequate housing;
- Being familiar with the Landlord-Tenant Act, Ontario WORKS, Ontario Disability legislation and other related legislation and regulations and assisting clients accordingly;
- Assessing housing needs and assisting clients in securing housing to meet those needs;
- Facilitating access to other community supports to address basic needs and housing set-up, including food, clothing, furniture and transportation assistance, as well as other agencies and health services;
- Help clients in accessing assistance programs including OW and ODSP, utility funds, trusteeship programs, and specialty funds such as the Housing Retention Program;
- Attend all relevant community events and meetings linked to homelessness or housing issues, as agreed upon with the Housing Manager and/or Executive Director;
- Maintain participant records in accordance with applicable standards and regulations, funding requirements, etc.
- Maintain accurate records in HIFIS
- Participate in continuing education activities, remaining knowledgeable in area(s) of expertise through training benefits and self-motivation;
- Participate and contribute to the staff team through active participation in staff meetings, retreats, debriefing and program events.

**SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Preference will be given to applicants with a degree/diploma in the field of social services and who have recent relevant experience working with the target population;
- A minimum of one-year experience in promoting housing for marginalized persons; experience within the Addictions, Mental Health or a closely related field is an asset;
- Familiarity with the communities of South Simcoe and the social services landscape is an asset;
- Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery principles and harm reduction philosophy;
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Housing First;
- Ability to engage sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills; excellent written and verbal communication, with administrative and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize tasks;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
- Demonstrated knowledge of human/legal rights and relevant legislation;
- Knowledge of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit culture is considered an asset;
- Positive personality and demonstrated ability to take initiative and exhibit extra effort to better serve the client;
- Strong analytic skills; with the proven ability to make appropriate decisions;
- Knowledge of HIFIS (Homeless Individuals and Family Information System) is an asset
- Valid First Aid certification;
- Mental Health First Aid is an asset;
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset;
- Valid G Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
**SUPERVISION**:
The Housing Access Worker (HAW) will report directly to the Housing Services Manager, and work closely with other members of the agency. The HAW may be in positions where they are the sole representative of CONTACT Community Services at various community events as a spokesper
