**Position Summary**

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada’s national Forests, Peatlands, and Climate Change (FPCC) program focuses on connecting field-based science and policy development for forests and peatlands across Canada, with a particular focus on high-integrity forests and peatlands in boreal and subarctic regions. The program is also closely connected to WCS global conservation programs for peatlands and forests and other international peatland groups. As part of our national level work, WCS Canada is leading the development of a shared vision and strategic framework for peatland protection and management in Canada, with multiple partners. Our goal is to identify policy options, procedures, tools, and actions for peatland protection and management at different governance levels across the country, and to build awareness about peatlands to contribute to global climate and biodiversity targets. We will draw on the collective experience to identify workable solutions to the challenges in implementing effective policy for peatland protection across Canada.

The Policy Analyst will support all policy-related work and activities for the Forests, Peatlands, and Climate Change program, including conducting research on peatland relevant policies and developing policy briefs to communicate key gaps and to promote potential solutions. The Policy Analyst will be responsible for designing and developing a draft policy framework, among other key tasks, for the peatland vision and strategic framework project.

**Position Objectives**

Support all policy related work and activities in WCS Canada’s Forests, Peatlands, and Climate Change Program, and in coordination with regional programs. Including:

- Develop approaches and tools for improving peatland relevant policies in Canada.
- Identify key policy gaps, solutions, and emerging issues, and develop approaches and tools to support the protection and management of forests and peatlands as natural climate solutions in Canada.

**Principal Responsibilities**
- Support all policy related work and activities for the Forests, Peatlands, and Climate Change program.
- Conduct research and a critical review of peatland relevant policies at different scales and governance levels (province/territory, federal, Indigenous, international). Relevant policies include natural resource development (e.g., critical minerals, forestry, agriculture) and wetlands and water management, in addition to policies specifically for peatlands management.
- Design and develop a draft strategic framework for peatland relevant policy in Canada.
- Work with the FPCC Director and other WCS Canada staff and partners to design and organize workshops to identify common goals, priorities, and policy options for peatlands in Canada.
- Identify examples and case studies for peatland policy to show solutions, procedures, and tools that may be implemented at multiple governance levels in Canada.
- Identify key policy gaps and emerging issues for forests and climate change in Canada.
- Develop policy briefs on forests, peatlands and climate change issues to communicate key gaps and issues and to promote potential solutions.
- Engage with policymakers and others in government and governmental agencies to highlight policy issues and promote solutions for forests and peatlands in Canada.
- Lead and co-author peer-reviewed publications on forest and peatland related policy issues in Canada.
- Assist the FPCC Director and regional program Directors with responses and input to forest, peatland, and climate change related government policy development and issues through public consultation processes.
- Contribute to WCS Canadas’s external and internal communications in collaboration with the WCS Canada Communications Team, including sharing program specific media content, developing communication plans for upcoming publications, etc.
- Serve as a spokesperson for WCS Canada’s messaging and work, actively seeking and delivering on opportunities to represent WCS to external audiences in media, conferences, events, etc.
- Promote the conservation of the wildlife and wild lands in Canada within the conservation community, donors, governmental agencies and other non-governmental organizations through meetings, active involvement in professional societies, speaking engagements, media interviews, writing, and general communications.
