**Position Overview**

This position will provide campus wide strategic real estate innovation project planning, development planning, risk identification and mitigation, and business development expertise for the University Innovation Quarter (UIQ). These priorities require the Program Manager, UIQ Business Development
to work closely with a variety of high-profile external stakeholders, including Innovate Calgary, University of Calgary Properties Group (UCPG), the U3 Consulting Group, along with community, government, and public representatives. The Program Manager, UIQ Business Development will report to the Executive Director of the UIQ, however will be highly autonomous in work completion and decision making.

A critical role for the Office of the VP Research, the Program Manger, UIQ Business Development will advance the University of Calgary's research and innovation agenda for UIQ. In this role, the Program Manager will support, implement, evaluate, and maintain the strategic direction and business plans for the development of UIQ, providing vision and leadership. The Program Manager, UIQ Business Development will work across the institution and support crossportfolio project teams on a broad range of research matters related to UIQ policies, programs, and initiatives.

**Position Description**

**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Leadership 50%
- Engages with key stakeholders, understands the impact on both internal and external stakeholders and manages risks and benefits accordingly.
- Plan, implement, and provide ongoing improvement of processes to ensure the effective development and approval of research programs and initiatives across the institution and beyond relative to UIQ.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external university stakeholders in order to provide operational leadership and oversee all related strategies, programs, and initiatives related to the position.
- Develop economic models and forecasts for the build-out of the UIQ.
- This Program Manager will deal with highly confidential information, including University budgets, external partner budgets. Other examples include specific unit budgets, accounting information, and information protected by legal privilege.
- Hiring of casual/summer students as needed, based on required project deliverables.

Project and Business Planning 50%
- Supports questions of project governance and decision-making among the UIQ partnership members.
- Supports overall business planning, budgeting and financial modeling of the university's role in UIQ.
- Budget owner for UIQ, including approval of all HR and expense transactions.
- Identifies and builds relationships with Innovate Calgary and UCPG to coordinate activities.
- Supports the Executive Director with the UIQ master plan, necessary ancillary uses to university and industry spaces, and real estate development and activation strategies.
- Works with the Office of the Vice-President (Research), Innovate Calgary, faculties, and other stakeholders to progress the development of the UCalgary Innovation ecosystem, refine programs and business models for research commercialization hubs and executes on the implementation of said hubs and other elements.
- Works with Innovate Calgary and others to develop and implement strategies for supporting faculty and student entrepreneurs and startup and scaleup companies.
- Works with the Office of the Vice-President (Research), Innovate Calgary, and other stakeholders to engage industry partners to participate in the UIQ as tenants and/or programmatic partners.
- Supports UIQ-related communication with stakeholders both internal and external to the university, including community groups, municipal, provincial and national stakeholders.
- Promotes interaction between all stages of industry growth, from startup to large corporations.

**Qualifications / Requirements**:

- Minimum of 5 years in commercial real estate.
- Minimum 5 years of project management experience, and/or real estate development experience.
- Minimum 3 years of business development experience relevant to developing technology-based enterprises.
- Minimum 3 years of leadership experience.
- Minimum undergraduate degree, master's preferred.
- Demonstrated project development expertise in the research and innovation domains.
- Expert communication and negotiation skills are a critical component of this position.
- Strong analytical skills, accurate data interpretation and the ability to integrate report data from various sources.
- Strong financial modelling and forecasting skills.
- Networking and public relations skills are additional requirements. The incumbent must be able to present the interests of the university in a professional manner and must be able to effectively deal with a wide variety of representatives and stakeholders across a broad spectrum of industries and other organizations.
