**Job Purpose**:
To display and promote fresh produce and to supervise department staff to meet objectives for sales, margin, inventory turns, labour and customer service.

**Responsibilities**:
The following is a list of the essential duties and responsibilities of this role. The tasks and time spent performing each task may vary as business needs require. The Sweet Potato maintains the right to modify job duties and responsibilities at its discretion.

**Merchandising**
- Plan attractive produce displays, using colour and texture to enhance; give the impression of abundance and quality, while maintaining proper storage conditions.
- Trim, wash, bundle produce as needed.
- Ensure displays are replenished, rotated, culled several times daily.
- Offer taste, samples, suggestions for purchase and ways to prepare products.
- Ensure building and maintaining of in-store displays, according to established standards for appearance, variety and ease of shopping and stocking.
- Set preparation & stocking priorities for department staff to ensure tables, coolers are fully stocked and rotated for freshness. Stock items as needed.
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date uniform department signs.
- Provide product information to customers, staff, and marketing team.
- Visit other stores for price comparisons, product and merchandising ideas.

**Supervision**
- Hire qualified applicants following established policy.
- Ensure on-the-job training.
- Provide regular feedback on performance for department support staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations.
- Recommend pay raises within the department budget.
- Take disciplinary actions as needed following established policies.
- Schedule hours for department staff within budget, and review hours.
- Organize department meetings.
- Ensure department staff is informed of storewide meetings and policy changes.
- Discipline and terminate staff, as needed, with support of Store Manager and/or Directors.

**Department Maintenance**
- Coordinate storage of items to be returned to suppliers. See that unsellable items are properly disposed of. Keep accurate shrink records.
- Ensure that produce department shelves, displays, aisles, prep and storage areas are in clean, orderly condition, meeting health & safety standards.
- Ensure that wash is disposed of swiftly and properly and the retail floor area is swept and mopped frequently.
- Mark down items as needed to reduce losses.
- Participate in and coordinate daily inventory counts.
- Ensure department equipment is maintained in working order. Advise Store Manager of equipment problems or needs.
- Coordinate daily check-in meetings with the produce staff.
- Ensure daily communication between President, Buyer, and Receiver.

**Customer Service**
- Pass on relevant literature for staff to read about relevant department products.
- Assist customers with special orders and support Customer Service Manager in ensuring that customers receive their orders.
- Ensure staff members are aware of changes in policies and procedures affecting customers.
- Respond to customer suggestions, comments, and complaints about respective departments in a reasonable manner in conjunction with the Customer Service Manager.

**Manager on Duty**
- Work regular MOD shifts as scheduled by the General Manager.
- Maintain a list of in-store problems, repairs, staffing issues for each shift.

**Other Responsibilities**
- Review financial reports of department performance and take corrective action as needed.
- Participate in setting sales and margin goals for the produce department.
- Attend Management Team meetings and storewide meetings.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and other reports as needed to the General Manager and/or President.
- Answer and route phone calls, take and route messages as needed.
- Perform other tasks conveyed by the senior management team.
- Participate in hiring, evaluations and training when requested by the senior management team.
- Working with Marketing Manager and senior management team to develop community events and initiatives.
