**JOIN OUR TEAM**

MOSAIC is seeking a Family Law Legal Advocate to join our Legal Advocacy Program. The Family Law Legal Advocate provides legal information, referral, legal support, public legal education, and related services in the areas of family law and child protection.

**POSITION FUNCTION**:

- Under the supervision of the Manager of the Legal Advocacy Program, the Family Law Legal Advocate provides legal information, referral, legal support, public legal education, and related services in the areas of family law and child protection.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Degree in Law or a University Degree coupled with Certificate of Paralegal Program, Conflict Resolution, and Community Development with comparable experience or a combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and experience in the areas of family law and child protection.
- Excellent knowledge of legal community and social-legal services available to immigrants, refugees, and newcomers.
- Good understanding of newcomer legal issues, concerns, and multicultural issues.
- Strong knowledge of legal community and social services available to clients Metro Vancouver.
- Superior file management and experience with client and professional ethics.
- Strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, verbal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as to seek assistance/advice/direction as appropriate.
- A knowledge of immigration and poverty law issues is an asset.
- Knowledge of a second language is an asset.
- Minimum of two years recent related experience.
- People with a lived experience as a newcomer are especially encouraged to apply.

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Provide information, triage, and referrals via client interviews to identify and summarize legal issues, prioritize legal needs, and offer realistic and fair legal solutions, including appropriate referrals to duty counsel, pro bono or low bono lawyers and other legal non-legal resources.
- Where appropriate, provide full file support to clients to promote early resolution of legal problems.
- As appropriate, supports consensual dispute resolution (CDR).
- Identify documentation and evidence the client needs to support positions, provide coaching and interpreting substantial and procedural law.
- Provide tips for legal research and self-advocacy by assisting the client to draft documents.
- Assist with the completion of forms.
- Communicate with the other party’s representative as appropriate.
- Accompany the client to court to orient, assist and organize the client.
- With permission of the court (judge), and when it is in the interests of the client, speak to the judge regarding the matter as appropriate.
- Explain orders or agreements, including how they impact the client’s rights and obligations.
- In cases of violence, provide safety-planning, risk-assessment, and crisis intervention, where needed, and refer client to appropriate resources (transition houses, trauma counselling, victim services, police etc.)
- Provide public legal education workshops and develop materials for distribution to the public.
- Assist with the development of and maintenance of high professional standards with respect to policy, file management, client communication and professional ethics.
