- Reporting to the Public Safety Advisor, the Social Policy Strategist supports the implementation of the municipality’s Council-approved Public Safety Strategy. This includes key coordination with respect to policy development, community engagement and mobilization, as well as planning activities related to priority areas under the Strategy, including gender-based violence, commercial sexual exploitation of children, and healthy masculinities. The position works closely with Indigenous communities and service providers to address complex community issues to improve the safety of Indigenous communities and works collaboratively with municipal staff and external partners and stakeholders to develop, implement, and provide ongoing support to corporate strategies, policies, and programs that advance community safety. The Strategist plays a key role in identifying and coordinating methods to achieve community priorities related to Indigenous community safety and wellbeing.**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Work collaboratively with communities to identify safety issues and coordinate approaches to improve safety and wellbeing
- Play a key role in the coordination, recommendation, and improvement of community safety programs and initiatives, with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Support policy development and evaluation.
- Provide support and coordination to teams and committees working in the community safety sphere both internally and externally.
- Provide guidance on Indigenous community safety issues and oversight of HRM’s efforts to address these issues, including the development and monitoring of related strategies and initatives
- Establish, maintain, and enhance cooperative relationships with HRM business units, local Indigenous service providers, and Indigenous Political Organizations.
- Collaborate with other business units, levels of government, non-profits, and community groups in the coordination and delivery of services to Indigenous populations.
- Represent HRM on issues related to community safety theme areas and service delivery.
- Other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education & Experience**
- Post-secondary degree in a related discipline or a combination of experience and other qualifications will also be considered
- A minimum of five (5) years of related experience in public policy or administration, community development or programming, and/or project management working alongside or with Indigenous organizations
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience developing, implementing, measuring, and adapting Indigenous engagement strategies, programs, or initiatives

**Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**
- A deep understanding of safety issues and challenges particular to Indigenous Persons and communities
- Thorough knowledge of the community-based safety landscape in HRM and Nova Scotia including trends, key players, and jurisdictional roles and responsibilities.
- Understanding of how colonization impacts individual and community safety for Indigenous Persons
- Demonstrated experience leading complex projects.
- Ability to integrate project management and program evaluation techniques in daily work.
- Strong interpersonal skills and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Strong research, planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate ways of working with equity-deserving communities including Indigenous peoples, African Nova Scotians, and immigrant communities
