**Working for the Department of Mechanical Engineering**

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is part of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering and is ranked in the top six mechanical engineering programs in Canada.

**Position**

The Research Assistant is responsible for assisting and supporting the Principal Investigator (PI) in the overall operation of the research/project study. Duties include/but are not limited to:

- Biomass feedstock collection, preparation, and characterization.
- Thermocatalytic reforming (TCR) experiments preparation, execution, and product analysis.
- Development and analysis of different experimental scenarios to help the understanding of the upscaling of the technology from laboratory to semi-field scale using the experimental data generated in both our TCR-2 and TCR-30 units.
- Preparation of reports, posters, and presentations on the progress of established goals in the thermochemical reforming process work to the Resilient and Clean Energy Systems Initiative, sponsor of the project.
- Keep up with the advancement and evolution of the TCR technology by reviewing the literature and obtaining the latest papers and information.

The Research Assistant must be able to work independently and monitor the accuracy, completeness, and relevancy of all data and information collected. This position works closely with the PI and the biomass team in writing reports from data collected and providing recommendations on the study, as necessary.

**Duties**
- Plan and execute experiments in the TCR units. This implies preparation of the equipment, execution of experiments and post-experiment activities (product collection and storage, equipment cleaning)
- Responsible of the characterization of the experimental products (bio-oil, syngas and bio-char) in our analytical laboratory or in other university or commercial laboratories when necessary.
- Preparation of reports, posters and presentations on existing work and progress on new experimental work for the Resilient and Clean Energy Systems Initiative, sponsor of the project.
- Participates in meetings to discuss new and established projects, abstract deadlines, grants, awards, and publications
- Travels for conferences/meetings pertaining to research clinic occasionally.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- An Engineering student with extensive experience in performing the required tasks
- Biomass processing experience
- Laboratory skills in thermochemical reforming
- Laboratory safety training is highly desirable including: Laboratory emergency response plan, working alone protocol, waste (chemical, biological, glass) storage and disposal procedures, WHMIS, safe operating procedures.
- Working experience with TCR unit is considered an asset.
