Social Harvest Ottawa is a food security social enterprise of Rideau Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre, aimed at making fresh food more accessible and affordable in Ottawa. It is part of the collaborative efforts of the Ottawa Food Collective, which also includes the Ottawa Good Food Box and MarketMobile. Social Harvest supports a community garden and educational activities focused on urban agriculture and environmental issues. The produce grown by Social Harvest is shared with our local Food Bank and offered for sale by the Ottawa Good Food Box and MarketMobile at an affordable price to Ottawa community members seeking to become more food secure.

The Ottawa Good Food Box offers community members the opportunity to purchase boxes of fresh, non-customized produce at set prices. Both conventional and organic produce boxes are available for site pick-up or home delivery if eligibility criteria are met. The MarketMobile offers in-person, mobile access to fresh food in communities lacking easy access to an affordable grocery store. The Ottawa Good Food Collective believes that everyone has the right to fresh, healthy food. We strive to make this happen by finding innovative solutions to food access issues in Ottawa.

I. **JOB SUMMARY**

Under the supervision of the Social Harvest Project Officer, the Growing Assistant will be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the growing room, which involves hydroponics and ebb-and-flow systems. In this position, the incumbent will gain skills inhorticulture, supply chain administration, and project and time management.

II. **PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**

A. **Crop Production and Operations**
- Plant, care, and harvest crops
- Package and label product
- Conduct experiments on new crops
- Report signs of insects or disease damage
- Manage pest control and implement safety measures
- Sterilize equipment, clean work areas, and maintain the space in good repair

B. **Administrative Support**
- Complete forms and records to document activities
- Manage the inventory of supplies and product
- Monitor growing room climate
- Research best practices for crop varieties

C. **Other duties**
- Work closely with colleagues (RRCRC staff, interns, students, and volunteers)
- Provide regular reports to supervisor
- Participate in team meetings
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

III. **JOB REQUIREMENTS**

A. **Knowledge**:
**Must have**
- Post-secondary education in a field related to plant biology, agriculture, or horticulture
- Knowledge of local food systems and principles of food security
- Experience with horticulture, agriculture, or gardening

**Desirable**
- Experience with hydroponic and ebb-and-flow growing systems

B. **Competencies**:

- Possession of a valid driver’s license; access to a personal vehicle an asset
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks, stand for extended periods of time, and lift 50 lbs.
- Intermediary computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Fluency in English is required; bilingualism is an asset

**Job Type**: Part-time
Part-time hours: 20 per week

**Salary**: $17.00-$19.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Day shift
- Monday to Friday

COVID-19 considerations:
Our centre still requires that employees provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with two doses.

Our centre will provide on a weekly basis R.A.T.s to be done at home before your scheduled shifts.

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Ottawa, ON K1K 3A7: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Licence/Certification:

- Class G Driver's License (required)
