**Job Description**:

The Enhanced Medical Staff Support (EMSS) team in Medical and Academic Affairs supports medical leaders who may be asked to attend to concerns raised regarding professionalism of medical staff. EMSS supports and helps to resolve professional issues as they arise and works proactively to enhance the capacity and ability of medical and other leaders across the organization to understand, manage, and resolve concerns.

This position is intensely complex due to the inherent unique characteristics of medical staff culture and their role as independent contractors. Furthermore, the environment in which medical staff practice adds an additional layer of complexity due to the influence of many external factors such as the role of Doctors of BC, the Joint Clinical Committees, the current political climate, local municipalities, the influence of the Ministry of Health and the Physician Master Agreement. The Manager develops, fosters, and maintains strong collaborative working relationships with the Medical Affairs leadership, Executive Medical Directors, Senior Island Health leaders, and other internal and external partners.

Reporting to the Director, Medical Staff Support and Resources, the Manager, Enhanced Medical Staff Support (EMSS) provides leadership and support to the EMSS team members in the management and resolution of Medical Staff professional conduct issues that are complex and high risk, and in contravention of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, and the Medical Staff Rules and Bylaws. The Manager works in collaboration with Medical and Academic Affairs leadership, medical leaders, and other key partners internal to the organization to oversee and facilitate the resolution of complaints, and minimize risk exposure to the organization. The Manager ensures that complaint pathways are accessible and that complaints and concerns are addressed in a timely, appropriate and respectful manner that is in alignment with relevant legislation, policies and procedures, and that matters of significant risk are appropriately escalated.

The Manager is responsible for ensuring the timely flow of accurate information to and from the relevant Medical Staff committees and governing bodies to assist with reviews. The Manager is responsible and accountable for the development and implementation of operational and strategic initiatives to support all aspects of the EMSS program and ongoing program and quality improvement.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in a relevant human services discipline and seven (7) years related conflict and complaint resolution / intervention experience with a high degree of complexity in an area related to medical staff.

**Skills And Abilities**:

- Demonstrated knowledge of pertinent laws and legislation, including Medical Staff Rules and Bylaws.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical staff relations and complaints management best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement and sensitivity managing complex, confidential and sensitive issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health care system issues and functions.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Leadership experience in program development, analysis, and measurement, utilizing continuous quality improvement methodology.
- Ability to lead, participate and facilitate inter-disciplinary groups in a collaborative environment with multiple interests.
- Ability to educate and provide consultation to healthcare professionals.
- Ability to develop, coordinate and deliver educational programs and presentations.
- Ability to work effectively with others, including working effectively in a multicultural environment, independently, as part of a team and understanding the frameworks of other disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, adhering to requirements of legislation and with sensitivity.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload in a complex environment.
- Advanced writing skills.
