**Position Title: Bereavement Social Worker**
**Reports to: Support Services Manager**
**Job Status: Permanent, Full-time**
**Remuneration: $60,000-$70,000 annually; Paid breaks, Vacation and Absence Paid time off, Group Insurance Benefits, RRSP Matching**
**Hospice Halifax is seeking a compassionate and supportive individual to join our multidisciplinary team, playing a vital role in helping individuals and families navigate the complex emotional and practical challenges associated with grief, death and bereavement. Our hospice residence is an inclusive space where individuals and their families receive personalized and dignified end-of-life care.
**About the Position**
Working in collaboration with the Support Services Manager, this position is responsible for supporting individuals and families, both in the community and in the hospice residence, who are dealing with a death or anticipated death.
The scope of this position will change over time; the current priority for this position is to provide grief and bereavement counseling services to our community members, with some support for current patients and family members. This position also supports the regular tasks of the Support Services Manager, providing coverage and relief as needed. Over time, this role may take on new and additional responsibilities within the hospice residence, including oversight of our bereavement programs.

**Duties and Responsibilities**
**Counselling Services**
- Provide one-on-one grief counselling for adult Nova Scotians who have experienced a death of a loved one (combination of virtual/phone/in-person sessions)
- Provide counselling and supportive care to current patients and family members as directed by the Support Services Manager
- Perform bereavement follow-up with family members and friends of former hospice patients
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions and progress
**Bereavement Programs**
- In partnership with the Support Services Manager, coordinate and facilitate existing grief and bereavement programs, counselling groups, peer support and drop in groups, and psychoeducational programs.It is anticipated that this position will, over time, assume most responsibility for overseeing all grief and bereavement programs
**Other Duties**
- Provide support to and coverage for the Support Services Manager, including but not limited to: visits with current patients and families, supportive counselling, family conferences, participation in rounds, end of life planning, conflict resolution, assessments, care planning, legacy work, and resource navigation
- Participate in data collection and tracking as required
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in the field
- Host debriefing (non-counselling) sessions for staff and volunteers
- Provide support, as needed, to Hospice Halifax volunteers who help facilitate bereavement support programs
- Rotating on-call coverage for weekend bereavement support groups
- Sit on various committees as appropriate
- Participate in fundraising and awareness events; be a positive representative of Hospice Halifax in the community
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Support Services Manager
**Qualifications and Experience**
Education and professional experience:
- Master's degree in Social Work from a recognized university, required
- Current registration with the NSCSW
- Minimum 2 years related clinical experience required
- Professional Social Work experience including therapeutic counselling experience
- Experience working within a private practice or counselling agency considered an asset
- Experience working with children, youth and adolescents would be considered an asset
Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced psychotherapy skills including grief therapies
- Knowledge of issues related to hospice and palliative care
- Knowledge of supportive therapies
- Compassion, empathy, and a deep understanding of the grief experience
- Strong de-escalation skills
- Tact and discretion in dealing with and handling confidential infor
