- Government Relations with the Ontario Association of Optometrists**
Role Summary
This is a fast-paced and fulfilling role to communicate and advance OAO’s interests and influence political and government agendas toward positive outcomes for optometry and eye health in Ontario. This position will support all aspects related to government engagement to deliver strategic priorities for the association.

What you will be doing
You will lead the OAO’s government affairs activities by establishing positive relationships with elected officials and government representatives in the Ontario government for the purpose of advancing optometry and eye health in Ontario. You will also:
- Develop strategic initiatives and communications assets to support the associations efforts to align and complement the government’s public policy positions
- Identify strategies to engage members in public policy input, lobbying campaigns and government relations by establish trusting relationships and opening doors with elected official and government representatives
- Manages media requests and monitors news media and sources for potential changes in regulatory, legislative and eye health arenas
- Play an active role in developing external communications including working with staff, board members and consultants to raise the profile of optometrists and eye health in Ontario
You bring to the role:
- A university degree, preferably a Masters, in political science, public policy, public relations, communications or relevant degree
- Three to five years of **government experience, ideally working **in a political office, the public service or government relations with a significant understanding of provincial government processes and institutions
- Success in the public service or government initiatives with a background of building and maintaining effective working relationships with elected officials and their senior staff
- Demonstrated competency in relationship development with a variety of stakeholders and capability to exercise leadership and diplomacy amongst diverse perspectives and priorities
- Very strong verbal and written communications skills with the ability to write speeches, statements, letters, presentations, notices and articles to inform and persuade a variety of audiences
