**In a Nutshell**: Reporting to the Manager, Design and Construction, the incumbent will gather field and general information for the preparation of detailed drawings for construction projects including active transportation facilities, roads, culverts, buildings, ditches and bridges. Produce simple site plan layouts with basic direction from engineering staff. Establish the technical civil aspects of a project and prepare plans, specifications and quantities for all projects as necessary. This includes layout and design for linear infrastructure including roads, intersections, drainage and roadside features, storm sewers and traffic control devices.
**Day in the Life**:

- Prepare or oversee roadway/highway design work using local/MTO or AASHTO standards: horizontal and vertical alignment, roadway sections, intersection layout and sight distance determination, interchange layout and right-of-way plans
- Assist with the preparation, update and verification of project deliverables including general arrangement drawings, detail drawings and design sketches in accordance with established quality procedures
- Monitor and inspect tendered construction projects to ensure the quality of materials and workmanship
- Prepare documents to support payments to Contractors
- Interact with other County Departments/Government agencies/Utility Companies to gather information needed for drawings of construction projects
- Assist Engineering Technicians in laying out and checking entrance culverts, driveways and turning lanes to reflect changes in site developments
- Assess highways for pavement condition ratings and prepare supporting documentation for the Asset Management Plan and Road Rehabilitation Program
- Perform intersection traffic counts and/or erect equipment to obtain daily speed/volume data for analysis.
- Attend meetings, seminars and courses
- Perform other duties as required

**What We Are Looking For**:

- Completion of secondary school and graduation from a 3-year Community College program with a diploma in/related to Civil Engineering Technology
- Certified Engineering Technologist certification is considered an asset
- Proficient with AutoCad/Civil3D or other design software as appropriate
- Must have two years of experience working with the preparation of layouts, detailed drawings and design documents and undertaking construction inspection/quality control for read-related projects
- The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a combination of light activity of long duration, medium activity of intermediate duration or heavy activity of short duration
- Hold and maintain an Ontario Class G license and access to a personal vehicle for business use (regular travel within the County of Essex is required)
