The Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO) is a certified union representing full-time faculty members, professional librarians, language teachers and Continuing Special Appointments Professors employed at the University of Ottawa. As a union, APUO’s principal functions are to negotiate the Collective Agreement and to ensure that the rights of its members under the Collective Agreement and the law are protected on a day-to-day basis.

We currently have an opening for a self-motivated, highly organized and capable individual to work as **Legal Counsel **(full time, regular and permanent)within our team. The Legal Counsel will be supported by a paralegal and will be working closely with the President, the Administrative Director and a team of Grievance/Liaison Officers.

**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The primary function of the Legal Counsel will be to provide general legal services, advice to the union and its staff, and handle legal and quasi-legal matters in a broad range of areas including, but not limited to, collective agreement negotiation, maintenance and enforcement of members’ rights pursuant to the Collective Agreement, human rights, occupational health and safety, anti-harassment and discrimination claims, long term disability, and pension rights. Main duties will include advising union executive officers, staff, and committees, as well as individual members of the bargaining unit, drafting and presenting submissions on legal and policy issues, and the presentation of cases on behalf of the union before labour arbitrations, human rights tribunals, labour relations board and courts, including judicial review and appellate work, in these areas.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- An LLB and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in labour and employment law.
- Knowledge of labour and related legislation and legislative changes, case law, collective agreement language, and grievance/arbitration procedures and practices.
- Strong analytical and research abilities as well as excellent writing and oral communication skills.
- Strong mediation skills to manage grievances and other disputes.
- The ability to work independently but also enjoy a collaborative small office environment.
- The ability to prioritize and coordinate projects and work within strict deadlines.
- Strong technological skills including the ability to conduct legal research, work with MS Office Suite, preferably using both Windows and Mac systems.
- Advanced communication skills in both French and English, spoken and written.
- The ability to work flexible hours as needed.

**ADDITIONAL INFORMATION**
- Reports to the APUO President and/or their delegate(s).
- Status: 35hrs/week, permanent. Includes a six-month (6) probation period.
- Starting compensation: $125,000 per year with an excellent benefits package, including a defined benefit pension plan.
- Hybrid work is an option.
- Start Date: As soon as possible.
