**General Purpose**

Reporting to the Manager of Emergency Planning and Administration, the Fire Prevention Officer will provide education for all levels of the University community regarding fire prevention, fire safety and equipment use.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

The Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for conducting fire & life safety planning, providing advice on practices, policies, codes, and standards. In addition, the incumbent reviews plans for code compliance, creates and maintains fire safety plans, programs and policies for the campus. They investigate reports of fire incidents to determine their cause and make the appropriate recommendations for improvements and preventative measures. The incumbent is also responsible for all training and education related to fire & life safety including buildings and construction related issues; promoting fire prevention; and supporting the Emergency Manager by increasing emergency awareness on campus. The incumbent must be knowledgeable regarding all fire and building codes, legislative requirements, Ontario Health and Safety Act, and University policies and procedures

The Fire Prevention Officer Acts as the Campus Safety Office (CSO) representative with Guelph Fire Department (GFD) keeping them apprised of campus changes in relation to ingress/egress re-routing and fire safety changes.

Other Responsibilities:

- Arranges and conducts fire safety inspections of all University of Guelph buildings; provides detailed inspection reports and provides corrective recommendations.
- Test and maintain fire suppression and alarm systems; conducts monthly fire alarm panel testing and records status of system.
- Maintains an effective program for inspection and testing of fire extinguishers as per the Ontario Fire Code.
- Works in a safe and responsible manner while following University of Guelph policies and procedures and safety rules and regulations per the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Develops and conducts training sessions in fire prevention, fire extinguisher use, and life safety.
- Plans, schedules, and conducts building fire drills, provides report with corrective recommendations.
- Provides advice to event promoters on fire prevention and life safety issues in relation to special events or functions.
- Consults with building construction, maintenance personnel, and Guelph Fire Department on National Fire Code, O.F.C. and life safety issues;
- Examines blueprints or diagrams when required and provides risk management and corrective recommendations.
- Investigates complaints of fire safety infractions or unsafe fire safety activities; provides advice and information; coordinates corrective action.
- Responds to emergency calls; (fire, fire alarms, medical assists, chemical spills, persons trapped in elevators).
- Utilizes and maintains department emergency equipment in a state of readiness
- Performs related duties as assigned by the Manager, Emergency Planning and Administration, Manager of Operations or the Director, Campus Safety Office.
- Is required to wear and maintain the appropriate work clothing provided by the University of Guelph.

**Requirements**:

- Grade 12 graduation plus completion of a Community College diploma of over 2 years in Fire Inspection and Safety or a related field or equivalent, plus 1-2 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of Municipal by-laws, Provincial Statutes and Regulations, and National Fire Prevention Association codes.
- Must possess excellent client and customer services skills with the ability to balance the needs of the clients within various departments.
- Must be familiar with and able to work effectively in a unionized environment.
- Network with peers through various groups, attend training to remain current within the fire safety field.
- The ability to analyze and solve problems promptly is an integral part of this position.
- The ability to use Microsoft office and other software programs is essential.
- Class G Ontario Driver’s License; excellent driving record.
- Valid First Aid Certificate; Basic Rescuer and Level C CPR
