The Railcar Repair Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the delivery of services provided and the employees assigned to the division. The Supervisor will work independently and in small team environments repairing and servicing various types of rail equipment. The work will take place in all weather conditions in an environment that operates 24/7, 365 days per year. The Supervisor will be required to be available to respond to emergency situations.
**Roles & Responsibilities**
Planning & Service Delivery
- Develops and implements plans to grow new and existing service and repair customers from both an external and internal basis
- Manages relationships with new and existing customers, complimentary service providers, contractors, shippers, and other key industry contacts
- Guides operations of the team coordinating with service users and providers
- Establishes work schedules and the mobilization of equipment and people
- Ensure equipment, tools, and materials are kept to appropriate standards and arrange for any necessary maintenance and repairs as necessary; ensure the services provided are aligned with the sites vision
- Provides quality customer and employee relations; interfaces with Cando Mechanical employees
Leadership & Employee Development
- Builds and maintains positive and healthy relationships and teams within the division
- Promotes and guides others to understand delivery of effective services, quality services and achievement of objectives and their interrelationship
- Conducts daily safety huddles with shop employees including job hazard analysis, hazard identification, and efficiency testing; ensures safety policies and procedures are understood and adhered to
- Creates and maintains a positive safety culture and upholds the principles of a positive safety culture
- Ensures for the delivery of training and development initiatives related to the division
Supervision & Administration
- Supervises operations and related assigned activities ensuring the necessary people, equipment, tools, and other resources are available to effectively provide services
- Provides supervision within the shop and field environment including assigning work,
providing hands-on activity and teaching, and monitoring of workloads and skill levels
- Coordinates the implementation and development of safety management systems (SMS), policies and practices within the division
- Manages team, human resources including participating in hiring, coaching and leading activities, participates in daily operations, monitors payroll and WCB functions, and manages purchasing for the department
- Involves employees in decision making regarding project planning, and policy issues
**Skills, Knowledge & Abilities**
- Demonstrates initiative to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload leading to successful implementation of projects in a constantly changing dynamic environment
- Demonstrates leadership including establishing focus, providing motivational support, fostering teamwork, and empowering others
- Working knowledge of legislation, regulations, and best practices relevant to shop services and employee relations
- Knowledge or willingness to learn AAR/ FRA/ TC certification procedures and practices
- Understanding of materials purchasing, inventory management, and basic accounting practices
- Ability to carry out production planning and meet Workplace Safety & Health and Worker’s Compensation standards
- General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
- Awareness of Lean management principles, concepts and 5S
- Must be able to work under pressure and adapt to change.
- Education and Experience
- Five 5 years experience in a progressive leadership and supervisory position preferred or proven leadership skills.
- Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
- Knowledge of railway operations is an asset
- Experience working in a 24/7 environment that operates 365 days per year
- Strong mechanical aptitude
