Job Description Summary

UBC Safety and Risk Services (SRS) is seeking an Occupational Health and Safety Associate to aid in maintaining and expanding the Occupational Hygiene programs being implemented at UBC. Under the guidance of the Occupational Hygiene Advisor, the Associate will develop, promote and implement hygiene related programs to assist with the anticipation, identification, evaluation, and control of hazards and safety risks within UBC workplaces, with the aim to protect the health and safety of the UBC community. This position provides guidance and recommendations on a wide range of Occupational Hygiene programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, both provincial and federal, and conformance with best practices as outlined in ISO 45001:2018.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Occupational Hygiene Advisor. This position also liaises with other UBC SRS departmental staff and other closely affiliated campus groups on various health and safety programs, processes and initiatives.

Work Performed- Support various Occupational Hygiene programs, which includes, but is not limited to, the Hearing Conservation Program, Respirator Protection Program, Indoor Air Quality Program, Hazardous Dust Programs (ie. Silica, Lead), and Thermal Stress Program.- Develop and review/update occupational health and safety documents, such as program documents, exposure control plans and safe work procedures.- Develop, coordinate and deliver occupational health and safety education/training sessions on workplace health hazards in person, through zoom, and with online modules.- Evaluate processes in the workplace to identify hazards that could result in adverse health effects and provide recommendations on mitigating those risks.- Perform and review risk assessments/exposure assessments and provide management strategies for eliminating or controlling hazards and promoting health protection.- Conduct site visits to develop and implement sampling strategies to assess potential occupational exposure to biological, chemical, and physical hazards in the workplace, interpret results, and communicate findings to appropriate stakeholders.- Participate in investigations to assess the adequacy of ventilation, humidity, temperature, and other conditions required for optimal indoor air quality.- Use specialized equipment including noise monitors, particulate monitors, gas monitors, anemometers, and quantitative fit testing units to evaluate the effectiveness of controls being utilized in a workplace- Advise on modifications to work environments and processes to reduce the risk of injury or illness from occupational hazards- Represent Safety & Risk Services on Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committees and provide resources and recommendations as needed- Summarize findings from surveys, audits, and inspections into statistics, and compile detailed reports for dissemination to supervisors, managers, or department heads.- Analyze trends to identify gaps and opportunities in safety projects and programs.- Performs other duties as assigned.

Inadequate safety and compliance measures could result in serious injury to faculty, researchers, staff, students and visitors to the University, or failure to comply with federal, provincial and municipal legislations in providing a safe working and learning environment. The failure to comply with federal, provincial and municipal legislations could involve the legal accountability of officers and administrators of the University and damage to the reputation of the University.
