The Manager, Laboratory Operations is responsible for managing the operation, maintenance, and use of departmental teaching and research laboratories, facilities, services, equipment, and technical resources. This role supervises technical support staff that provides support to teaching and research programs, and contributes to the development and implementation of the department’s strategic directives. There are over 60 main research and teaching laboratories plus ancillary labs and offices totaling over 8300 sq. m. of space. A large portion of the space (laboratory environments in particular) is technically complex in nature, often hosting sophisticated infrastructure (including the Neutron Generator Facility housing a deuterium/tritium neutron generator and the 8pi gamma-ray spectrometer).

Qualifications:
Master of Science degree in Chemistry or related discipline and five years related experience in the management of teaching and research laboratories and operations in a university or institutional environment, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent knowledge of teaching and research standards, science laboratory requirements and configurations.
- Good knowledge of the principles of planning, design and construction of institutional laboratory facilities.
- Good knowledge of common and specialized scientific laboratory equipment, instrumentation, facilities, operations and procedures in modern biological sciences.
- Good knowledge of related laboratory health and safety guidelines/regulations (University, Provincial, Federal), risk management assessment, laboratory hazards (e.g., chemicals/pesticides, biologicals, radioisotopes), and safety equipment/procedures.
- Working knowledge of advanced scientific instruments (e.g., Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and mass spectrometers, and a range of microscopies).
- Excellent planning, organizational ability, analytical reasoning, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent financial and personnel management skills.
- Excellent supervisory and team management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Ability to interact cooperatively with people of differing personalities both within the Department and in other university departments and internal/external support services in order to achieve positive results.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to use enterprise systems including purchase requisition and payroll reporting systems and student information systems.
- Ability to exercise professional and mature judgment and to handle confidential/sensitive material with discretion.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple demands.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with others, and to meet deadlines.
