Reporting to the Chief Facilities Officer, the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety is responsible in promoting a safety-conscious culture within the organization working with management, a wide range of internal ROM stakeholders, the unions, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee, and government agencies to ensure organizational standards and responsibilities are carried out.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Develops and implements comprehensive Occupational Health and safety policies and programs in compliance with government legislations, industry standards and best practices to address potential hazards and risks effectively using a proactive approach to prevent workplace accidents, illnesses, and injuries and maintain all associated documentation.
- Identifies areas of potential risks and works with ROM stakeholders to develop appropriate measures to address risks and provides guidance for a wide range of ROM activities, including dealing with collection-related hazardous materials, hazardous materials in research laboratories, construction and exhibition installation efforts by ROM staff and/or ROM contractors.
- Serves as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, coordinate workplace inspections, act as a liaison regarding complaints, by ensuring that the workplace concerns are brought to, and discussed with the committee.
- Serves as a member of the Emergency and Disaster Planning Team which duties will include providing expertise with document formulation, its execution and training responsibilities.
- Implements and recommends training programs based on ROM stakeholder engagement, needs assessments, and legislative requirements to ensure all staff and supervisors are trained.
- Coordinates all aspects of workers compensation, including accident investigation, processing WSIB claims and coordinating reimbursement arrangements. Working with the managers, coordinates rehabilitation, return to work and/or modified work arrangements. Obtains summaries and provides WSIB reports, as needed.
- Ensures compliance under the legislative requirements for first aid. Maintain adequate first aid supplies; coordinate first aid training as prescribed by legislative standards (i.e. First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and CPR and AED etc.).
- Maintains chemical inventory Database (SDS Records), coordinates waste disposal and inventory labeling requirements, in conjunction with appropriate departments.
- Assesses risk mitigation plans (submitted by the curator) for a wide variety of fieldwork across the globe.
- Participates in the planning process for gallery and exhibit development, facilities operations, research laboratory operations, stewardship and handling of collection objects, and in the construction and renovation of other areas in the Museum and areas controlled by the Museum such as off-site storage, from a health and safety standpoint, by proactively identifying potential risks, reviewing plans, discussing concerns and recommending adjustments.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of five to eight (5-8) years of related experience, ideally in a unionized environment, including exposure to coordinating/conducting training programs.
- The following certifications would be considered an asset:

- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
- Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)
- Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP)
- Certified Return-To-Work Coordinator (CRTWC) Certification
- Or other relevant certification(s).
- Thorough knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIB), and WHMIS legislation.
- Working knowledge of Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code is an asset.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
- Experience managing and leveraging contracts with third-party vendors such as Employee and Family Assistance Programs, disability claim litigators, Disability Insurance Providers, and Occupational Health Services is preferred.
- French language skills would be considered an asset.
