Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources and Safety, the HSA is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of the organizational Health and Safety Management System (HSMS). This position blends strategic HSMS program ownership with hands‑on field support and verification providing technical guidance to leadership and employees, conducting worksite inspections and audits, leading incident and hazard management processes, and supporting contractor Health and Safety compliance. The position works collaboratively with Operations and Maintenance, Engineering, and other departments to ensure Health and Safety requirements are practical, effectively communicated, and integrated into workplace activities.
This is a blended field and office role, based in the Edmonton Region. Regular field presence and engagement with employees is an important component of the position, with the balance of field and office work varying based on operational, project, and organizational needs.
Promoting and Embedding Health and Safety Culture
Promote the health, safety, and wellness of workers and the sustainability of the workplace.
Encourage a culture of Health and Safety by incorporating Health and Safety considerations into all stages of work planning and execution, including operational, maintenance, and project activities.
Maintain regular on-site presence and offer support and guidance in compliance with the HSMS,including engagement with employees performing field work.
Support the Leadership Team in preparing for and executing Health and Safety meetings and participatein departmental safety meetings, toolbox meetings, project kick-offs, and other operational meetings asrequired.
Ensure timely communication of Health and Safety updates, news, and awareness information acrossthe organization and support the coordination of the corporate safety meetings.
Develop and maintain the HSMS in accordance with relevant OHS legislation, standards, and industrybest practices, including policies, procedures, forms, emergency plans, safe work practices, job hazardassessments, and codes of practice, with appropriate input from affected employees and departments.
Develop and implement internal Health and Safety training programs for onboarding new employeesand renewing training for existing employees, and identify additional training needs arising fromoperational changes, incidents, field observations, and regulatory requirements.
Assist in developing confined space entry and alternative energy isolation codes of practice as needed,and provide Health and Safety support for other higher-risk operational and maintenance activities.
Maintain Emergency Response Plans for the organization and conduct drills and exercises to evaluatetheir effectiveness.
Field Inspections, Compliance, and Assessment
Conduct routine field inspections and audits to assess conformity to the HSMS by inspecting andauditing facilities, equipment, and workplace practices, and engaging with employees performing thework.
Assess the implementation of the HSMS to ensure consistency with organizational processes, AlbertaOHS legislation, and other applicable regulatory requirements through work observations andcomprehensive record reviews.
Assess and provide recommendations in alignment with Health and Safety best practices, standards,and applicable regulations, including practical improvements to work practices, procedures,equipment, and workplace controls.
Provide field Health and Safety support during operational and maintenance activities, project kick-offs,work planning, shutdowns/tie-ins, and other higher-risk activities as required.
Document and follow up on findings from inspections and audits and support verification that identifiedcorrective actions have been effectively implemented.
Hazard Identification, Risk Management, and Incident Management
Lead and support hazard management processes and oversee risk-reduction measures, includinghazard assessments, elimination, and control processes, in collaboration with affected employees,supervisors, and departments.
