Position Purpose and Summary
This role advances the mission and vision by creating clear, compelling, and brand-consistent visual design across print and digital channels.
Reporting to the Creative Lead, this role translates creative direction into polished design executions that support enrolment, advancement, communications, events, and institutional priorities. This role contributes to concept development, produces high-quality design assets and helps maintain strong brand application across campaigns, publications, web, social, environmental, and event materials.
Key Areas of Accountability
Visual Design Execution
- Produce high-quality design work for integrated marketing and communications projects across digital and print channels.
- Translate creative briefs and approved direction into clear design solutions that reflect project goals and audience needs while faithfully expressing the University's brand promise.
- Develop campaign assets, publications, presentations, signage, event collateral, web graphics, email graphics, social media assets, and other visual materials as assigned.
- Adapt campaign concepts across multiple formats and channels while maintaining consistency, clarity, and quality.
- Use sound design judgment in typography, layout, hierarchy, image selection, accessibility, and visual storytelling.
Brand Stewardship and Design Systems
- Apply TWU's visual identity consistently across assigned projects, ensuring that design work aligns with institutional brand standards and creative direction.
- Support the development and maintenance of reusable templates, design systems, and production-ready assets that improve consistency and efficiency.
- Identify brand application issues and recommend practical improvements to the Creative Lead.
- Stay current with design trends, higher education practices, and platform-specific design expectations.
Production, Workflow & Asset Management
- Coordinate design work with the Creative Lead, project leads, and Marketing Services team members to support agreed timelines and priorities.
- Prepare design work for Creative Lead review, incorporate feedback, and move approved work through final production.
- Package files accurately for print, digital delivery, vendor handoff, and archival storage.
- Work with print and digital suppliers as assigned to ensure files meet technical requirements and final outputs reflect approved design standards.
- Maintain organized working files, final assets, and design archives in SharePoint and other systems.
Collaboration and Support
- Collaborate constructively with writers, marketers, communicators, project leads, student designers, freelancers, and campus partners.
- Contribute ideas during creative discovery, brief development, and concept exploration while supporting the Creative Lead's final direction.
- Provide practical guidance to student designers or freelancers on assigned projects, including file preparation, brand application, and production details.
- Communicate clearly about timelines, capacity, project status, and design considerations.
Key Interactions
Collaborates with: Marketing Services, Strategic Communications, Enrolment, Advancement, University Events, academic units, external vendors, freelancers, and student designers.
Reports to: Creative Lead
Job Standards and Requirements
Education: A bachelor’s degree or diploma in graphic design, visual communication, communications, fine arts, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience and a strong portfolio may be considered.
Experience
- 3 - 5 years of professional graphic or visual design experience is preferred.
- Experience designing for integrated campaigns, publications, digital channels, events, or institutional communications is an asset.
- Experience in post-secondary, non-profit, agency, or in-house marketing environments is an asset.
- A portfolio demonstrating strong design craft, brand consistency, and practical production ability.
Knowledge And Skills
- Strong working knowledge of graphic design, typography, layout, visual hierarchy, image treatment, and production design.
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and related design tools; familiarity with Canva, MediaValet, Marq, or other collaborative design tools is an asset.
- Experience preparing files for print, digital, web, email, and social media environments.
- Ability to interpret a creative brief, ask clarifying questions, and produce thoughtful design solutions.
