What We Do
Since , The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.
The Youth Health Clinic provides team-based primary health care and social programming to youth aged 12 to 24. The Youth Health Bus provides team-based primary health care and integrated mental health and social supports to youth aged 12 to 24 through a partnership with the Calgary Board of Education.
Under the general direction of the Mobile Health and Youth Health Centre Clinic Manager, the Youth Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work to their full scope of practice. The NP will provide comprehensive medical and social care to vulnerable clients in Calgary between the age of 12-24 as well as their children, including individuals with multiple co-morbidities. This will include advanced assessments and diagnoses, ordering diagnostics, and prescribing medications and other treatments. The NP will work primarily at The Alex Youth Health Centre.
This is a permanent, part-time position.
What You Will Do
- Provide care on the Youth Health Bus in collaboration with a Peer Support worker in an outreach capacity. Some services may also be delivered at the Alex Community and Youth Health Centers as needed.
- Work in the Youth Health Center providing comprehensive primary care and episodic care.
- Deliver episodic primary care to clients in community settings.
- Diagnose and manage both common and complex health conditions; provide advocacy and patient education.
- Conduct advanced assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans.
- Prescribe pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other therapies.
- Perform procedures, interventions, and treatments (including wound care).
- Perform procedures, interventions, and treatments which could include IUD insertion and contraceptive implant insertions.
- Build a panel of patients through the clinics at The Alex.
- Provide guidance to members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations.
- Collect data and support evaluation processes.
- Provide support in program design and development.
- Foster a team culture that promotes health and safety and a harassment free environment.

What You Bring
- Active license with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) under Family/All ages registration.
- Completion of an approved Master’s degree/Nurse Practitioner program and triplicate prescribing authority.
- Demonstrated ability to practice both independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
- Knowledge, skills and abilities to work with complex individuals experiencing addictions, mental health, isolation, homelessness and poverty concerns.
- Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style to meet the unique needs of individuals.
- Comfort working with harm reduction, strength-based, and trauma-informed care approaches, along with an understanding of anti-oppressive practice.
- Ability to set boundaries yet able to effectively build relationships with hard to engage patients.
- High level of initiative, flexibility and professionalism.
- Experience, or willingness to expand experience, in addiction medicine and harm reduction, including starting and maintaining opioid replacement therapy. (e.g. Suboxone, Sublocade, Methadone and Naltrexone).
