Overview Under the direction of the Clinical Manager(s), and in collaboration with Clinical Educators and Clinical Resource Nurses, the primary function of the Clinical Mentor is to act as a guide, role model, and advisor who facilitates debriefings and shares practical, day-to-day applied knowledge with other nurses. The Clinical Mentor provides rapid, just-in-time clinical mentorship on the unit, department, or program and works with nurse educators to ensure competence in the area of practice. They support nurses to ensure a smooth transition into new areas or levels of practice and promote an interprofessional, patient-centered approach to care based on best available research evidence. The incumbent fosters growth of new or developing staff within an effective mentoring relationship while supporting self-learning objectives. Responsibilities Overview: Patient Care/Clinical Practice Provides safe and effective patient care Promotes principles of interprofessional team practice by engaging team members with mutual respect and collaboration Guides interactions within the interprofessional team in developing individualized patient care plans and coordinating care Demonstrates effective communication with colleagues, patients, and families Demonstrates problem solving in complex situations and manages rapidly changing circumstances Demonstrates collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills Maintains an approachable and welcoming demeanor Exhibits accountability and sound decision-making in patient care and team support Assists staff to develop clinical skills and comfort within the team Communicates with staff, educators, and clinical managers to promote staff development and safe functioning Facilitates effective debriefing after difficult clinical situations Promotes adherence to facility/unit policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines including documentation of occurrences/patient safety events Works with nurses who are new to the unit or developing their skills to consolidate abilities and independence Utilizes adult education principles to reinforce educational material and supports practice proficiency Supports evidence-informed, reflective practice and skill development Develops and implements nursing practice standards to support safe, quality care Monitors nurses’ development through mentoring Provides feedback to stakeholders related to onboarding, continuing education and competency development Works as a professional nurse within an interprofessional team Demonstrates a positive attitude, effective communication, and professional relationships Addresses patient safety risks and escalates concerns to supervision as needed Displays respect, patience, and active listening Promotes growth, motivation, and leadership within the team Engages in personal and professional growth through self-directed learning Promotes participation of unit staff in educational and professional development Education and Professional Development: Plans and coordinates clinical activities to promote optimal patient care and staff transition to new roles or skill levels Identifies and supports strategies to meet ongoing educational needs of all unit staff Demonstrates strong coaching skills to foster growth while providing constructive feedback Supports unit staff in preceptor or mentorship relationships with students or new staff Promotes participation in educational opportunities Research and Quality Improvement: Participates in the evaluation of the Clinical Mentor role based on outcome criteria Supports and promotes the implementation of research projects and quality improvement activities Other: Promotes safety awareness among staff and identifies potentially unsafe practices Performs other duties as required, consistent with the responsibilities of the position Qualifications Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing Eligible for active practicing licensure as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the applicable regulatory body in Manitoba Certification in Adult Education Minimum of three (3) years of recent applicable clinical nursing experience specific to the unit or program For specialty areas, a minimum of five (5) years of recent applicable clinical nursing experience specific to the unit or program Experience as a preceptor, facilitator or mentor within the last three (3) years Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Training as delineated in Prairie Mountain Health Policy PPG-00002 CPR Training Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent from province of residence, and access to a personal vehicle for Prairie Mountain Health Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Internet applications Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work independently Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing techniques and procedures Demonstrated knowledge and competence of skills and concepts related to the position Demonstrated communication skills Ability to respect and promote confidentiality Ability to perform the duties of the position on a regular basis Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population Ability to work effectively and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, clients and within an interdisciplinary team Seniority level Mid-Senior level Employment type Full-time Job function Other Industries Hospitals and Health Care Note: This description has been refined to remove boilerplate and unrelated notices while preserving core job responsibilities and qualifications. #J-18808-Ljbffr
