Recruitment Range: $42.73-$48.83 per hour Growth Range: up to $54.93 per hour Schedule: Regular full-time hours are 32 - Monday to Thursday, 8 hours per day inclusive of a one‑hour paid lunch break. Option to work up to 40 hours per week including Fridays. The successful candidate will be required to provide an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment. Position Summary The Language Manager is responsible for leading, coordinating, and advancing Esquimalt Nation’s Lekwungen Language Revitalization initiatives. This position plays a central role in implementing the Nation’s 5‑Year Language Revitalization Plan, supporting the intergenerational transmission of language, and fostering deep community engagement. Working closely with the Language Specialist and reporting to the Director of Education, the Language Manager will provide strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight to ensure that Esquimalt Nation’s language initiatives are grounded in community vision, values, and cultural continuity. Primary Responsibilities Project & Strategic Management Oversee the implementation of Esquimalt Nation’s 5‑Year Language Revitalization Plan, ensuring alignment with community vision and values. Coordinate and track multiple projects, including language documentation, community programming, curriculum development, and community engagement. Facilitate regular evaluation and reporting of progress on language goals. Funding & Budgeting Lead funding applications and reporting processes to support language initiatives (e.g., First Peoples’ Cultural Council, FNESC, Heritage Canada). Manage project budgets in collaboration with the Finance and Education departments, ensuring funds are aligned with program priorities. Supervise and support language staff and contractors (e.g., language learners, curriculum developers, media specialists). Build a positive team environment grounded in Indigenous values, mutual respect, and community accountability. Coordinate training and professional development opportunities for language staff and learners. Language Learning & Community Engagement Actively engage in Lekwungen language learning and demonstrate commitment to personal language growth. Support the development and facilitation of community language programs (e.g., immersion camps, family sessions, land‑based learning). Foster relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and cultural holders in respectful, reciprocal ways. Support intergenerational language transmission and create opportunities for youth and families to engage in language reclamation. Training, Education, and Experience Experience in program or project management, including planning, budgeting, and reporting. Experience writing successful grant applications and managing funding agreements. 3–5 years’ experience working with Indigenous communities or in a First Nations context is an asset. A diploma or degree in Education, Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, or a related field is an asset. Willingness to actively learn and use the Lekwungen language. Knowledge of Esquimalt and/or Indigenous peoples, languages, and cultures. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments. Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with experience in planning, budgeting, and reporting. Strong communication (verbal and written) skills. Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities. Demonstrated commitment to Indigenous language revitalization and community‑based education. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Teams, and Outlook. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Esquimalt and/or Indigenous peoples, languages, and cultures. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments. Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with experience in planning, budgeting, and reporting. Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
