Position Summary The Future Harvest Partnership is a multi‑year collaboration between Wilfrid Laurier University, the Territorial Agrifood Association (TAA) and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI). Supported by an interdisciplinary team of leading academics from across North America, and informed by Indigenous Governments and traditional knowledge, the Partnership engages with food producers and local communities of the Northwest Territories to co‑create research and generate useful insights for innovation and policy that can inform the development of a climate‑resilient local food system. The Research Associate is integral to the success of the program. Working alongside Indigenous organizations, the Research Associate duties include preparing for and conducting research in various communities and locations throughout the NWT, in collaboration with Laurier faculty, students and project partners (TAA and GNWT‑ITI). This includes providing technical and logistical support for community‑based research, and other tasks related to the field‑level support for the project. The Research Associate also works with researchers directly, and supports their work by maintaining a high‑level view of projects and goals, and liaising with local partners to coordinate efforts and create collaboration opportunities. Occasionally, the Research Associate may also provide research support by helping with data collection, data analysis, reporting, coordinating meetings, and other tasks. Reporting to the PI, this full‑time position will work out of Yellowknife, NWT. Accountabilities Research and Administrative Support: Support principal investigators (PIs) and the Research Team in shaping and designing project goals and long term objectives and actions; Engage/liaise with community members and partner organizations (academic, government, Indigenous governments and communities, NWT non‑governmental organizations) in collaborative projects, with direction and guidance from the PI; Engage/liaise with Indigenous communities, to form and support Indigenous Advisory Panel; Collaborate with project partners in preparing annual reports, presentations, and plain‑language summaries; Collaborate with other research associates and the PI, on various objectives of the project as well as with other intersecting laboratories at Laurier and partner organizations; and Engage in outreach activities on Laurier’s behalf, including giving talks on Laurier research initiatives across the territory and engaging with Indigenous groups, schools and NGOs; Provide logistical and engagement/collaboration support for researchers conducting community‑based research on food systems and community‑based monitoring in the NWT; Assist with design and set‑up of community‑based data collection, on‑the‑land camps, and other community‑based research and engagement activities; Maintain, nurture and advance collaborative relationships, fostering trust and goodwill; Support training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and partnership members as required; and Maintain high degree of consideration for self and team safety in all work environments. Qualifications Graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in Geography, Environmental Studies, International Development, Global Studies, or other relevant subject area. Hours of Work This is a full‑time, limited term contract with an approximate end date of January 2028. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Compensation Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
