Mental Health Counsellor - NH Montreal Job Title: Mental Health Counsellor Job Status: Part time (10-15 hours/week) Contract Type: Independent Contractor Reports to: Mental Health Lead Location: Nisa Homes Montreal (In person) Nisa Foundation is a community‑based charity that has promoted safety, security, and mental wellness for racialized women across Canada since 2014. The organization provides toll‑free peer‑to‑peer counseling services, transitional homes for women & children fleeing abuse or homelessness, and facilitates educational workshops. Its mission is to transform communities by engaging, equipping, and enriching the lives of women and children to reach their full potential. Responsibilities Conduct one‑on‑one peer‑to‑peer supportive counseling sessions with residents weekly to set and achieve goals, address challenges, and refer where necessary. Develop and implement regular mental health and wellness support groups on topics such as self‑esteem building, empowerment, self‑care strategies, depression, anxiety, and stress. Use basic counseling skills to create a safe connection with clients to work on supportive care, goals, and referrals to community professionals. Work with residents and their caseworkers to support the housing process and integration into the community. Provide training to staff and volunteers on trauma‑informed practices, mental health resources, and other training as needed. Assign and oversee counseling volunteers to residents. Attend training provided by NF and external training opportunities to develop counseling skills. Participate in intake assessments when needed to assess eligibility and flag signs of referrals for increased mental health care. Coordinate with caseworkers to ensure the best service and case management available to clients. Summarize and organize information for discussion in case of unique client situations; provide weekly updates to House Manager and Mental Health Lead; maintain counseling notes, incident records, and other documentation on CRM database. Liaise with other services, agencies, and professionals; maintain knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence; provide presentations and public‑awareness activities. Facilitate community networking; attend meetings and workshops as needed. Participate in additional meetings and undertake reasonably assigned responsibilities, including special projects and cross‑departmental initiatives. Clear Vulnerable sector check. Language proficiency in a second language would be an asset (Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Somali, Punjabi, Dari, Pashto, French). Relevant degree such as Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field, especially with regard to homelessness and vulnerable women. Minimum of 2–3 years experience (other combinations of education, experience, and training may be considered). Able to adhere to the highest standards of ethical care and confidentiality policies. Demonstrates commitment to professional practice, adhering to professional codes of ethics. Demonstrates wellness practices: can identify personal stressors, know when to ask for help, identify and manage signs of burnout.
