Position: Health and Safety Specialist The Health & Safety Specialist supports the day-to‑day functions of health and safety and mental and physical wellness at retail stores, the distribution centre, the production facility, and the support centre. The Specialist works closely with the business unit leads and the Manager, Safety and Security to proactively identify and develop solutions to address the full range of safety risks to the organization. This position is responsible for the promotion of the total safety strategy and safety management system with a focus on worker health, psychological and physical wellbeing, injury and incident prevention, loss prevention, inspections, training and communication. The Specialist often works without direct supervision and is required to influence others. Accountabilities Business Support Coaching, motivating and training teams on all aspects of safety and wellbeing Develop, support and coach Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members, Safety Champions, and Department Supervisors Provide guidance and expertise to management on safety priorities, risks, hazards, and associated costs Provide assistance to incident response and act as first responder to emergency situations Promote and endorse prevention as a way of life for all Team Member. Health & Safety Programs Preventative controls and response measures are in place to prevent injuries from occurring. When an incident does occur, the specialist works to mitigate both personal and financial impact and maximize recoveries Apply subject matter expertise in matters pertaining to personal safety and support continuous improvement of current processes and procedures Policies and procedures are designed and maintained to mitigate against safety incidents affecting Team Members and Guests Support business unit leaders in the development of action plans to address gaps in compliance Regulatory compliance is met in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety Respond to incidents of Team Member injuries and complete investigations Investigations into Team Member Critical injuries are completed and recommendations are made to prevent future incidents from occurring again Liaise with government and other agency officials, inspectors and officers during site inspections and visits Workplace Claims Support the Third-Party Claims provider with the management of workplace injury and illness claims Support business unit leaders with the management of workplace injury and illnesses along with reporting requirements Support the Manager, Safety and Security with appeals management and decisions Site Visits and Audit Conduct regular site visits at all locations in assigned areas; complete risk assessments, Health & Safety audits and gap analysis to produce prioritized action plans that address required items Site background information is collected and reviewed prior to completing inspections Site visits are completed at each site in the assigned area in a collaborative manner with the business unit managers Site Visit reports are generated Site Visit reports are summarized distributed and debriefed with the business unit leader Training and Communication Training is delivered to ensure that work is performed in accordance with policies, procedures and regulations Timely and relevant communications are sent with a consist cadence Support the Manager, Safety and Security develop, implement, and enhance company-wide asset protection programs Contribute to the execution of department and company plans within operational expense budgets Contribute to the execution department and company strategic priorities within capital expense budgets Contributes to the overall profitability of the company through department expense optimization, reduction of costs associated with injuries, illnesses, accidents and theft, Contributes to the overall profitability of the company by positively impacting workplace performance, reducing injury related costs and optimizing operational expenses. Special Projects Participates in cross-functional meetings as required, providing subject matter expertise and guidance in the areas of Health & Safety and Workplace Claims Complete special projects as assigned Health and Safety Promotes and endorses Safety Vision “Safety is our way of life”. Observes and support Longo’s Safe Work guidelines and other safe work practices. Role models the importance of health and safety by always working safely and calls out and addressed and safety issues. Recognizes risks which may pose a danger to Team Members and customers and resolves such issues (where possible) or modifies work, mitigating the risk to Team Member/customer until resolution can be sourced and implemented (i.e., Longo’s Call Center Harassment/Violence Reference Guide) Ensures all pre-use checks (where applicable) are conducted and all equipment is maintained to provide for safe operation by Team Members. Ensures that TMs are trained to safely carry out their work in the department and ensures that all work is safely carried out by Team Members. Post-secondary education or equivalent, preferably related to health and safety and/or public safety Minimum of 2-3 year previous experience in a similar role in a retail and/or warehousing environment Investigations training in workplace injuries and incidents Competed training and/or certifications in standard first aid, material handling equipment, working at heights, JHSC Level 1 & 2, etc. Working knowledge of provincial legislation (Occupational Health and Safety Act, WSIB Act) and their applications in retail, food production, warehousing, and office settings Established network of contacts and relationships in the health, safety, wellbeing, and loss prevention communities Knowledge of workplace ergonomics, driving standards/best practices, warehouse standards, health and wellbeing and other related areas Demonstrated advanced knowledge of illness/injury prevention practices Strong written, presentation and verbal communication skills Effectiveness in developing relationships and influencing key stakeholders Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office suite including Office 365, Sharepoint, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint Work is performed in a standard office, retail store, warehouse, cold storage and production environments with participation in meetings in-person and online Ability to work from home, as needed/ Travel may be required.
