2x PhD opportunities, carbon cycling and hydrology - Montreal, Canada Seeking two motivated doctoral students to study the carbon cycle and hydrological processes in Quebec's wetland ecosystems. 2 PhD student opportunities with Scott Davidson (Montreal, Canada) to join the CARCLIQUE research chair focused on carbon cycling and hydrology of Quebec's wetlands (see attached); Description PhD Position 1:urbance Impacts on Swamp and Forested Peatlands (southern Québec) Project overview: This project aims to quantify how human disturbances such as agriculture, forestry, and road construction affect carbon cycling and hydrology in swamp and forested peatlands of southern Québec. Research objectives: Quantify carbon flux responses to disturbance: measure CO and CH fluxes from vegetation, soils and trees across forested wetlands with contrasting land‑use histories. Evaluate peat and microbial responses: collect peat/soil cores, roots, and analyze microbial communities to assess how disturbance alters belowground carbon storage and processes. Assess hydrological alterations: install hydrology loggers to monitor water table variability and link changes to carbon fluxes and dissolved organic carbon export. PhD Position 2: Carbon Stocks and Fluxes in Arctic peatlands Project overview: This project focuses on understanding the spatial variability of carbon storage and fluxes in peatlands near Kangiqsualujjuaq and Salluit (Nunavik), and scaling findings to landscape‑level estimates. Research objectives: Characterise microtopographic variability in carbon fluxes: measure CO and CH4 exchange across permafrost landscape features. Quantify peat and vegetation carbon stocks: collect peat cores and above‑ground biomass to estimate carbon storage. Upscale to the regional scale: integrate field data with drone‑based surveys and spatial mapping to produce regional carbon budgets. Tasks Successful candidates will contribute to field and laboratory research to improve understanding of wetland responses to environmental change and disturbances as part of the CARCLIQUE Research Chair. Requirements MSc degree in environmental science, ecology, geography, soil science, hydrology, biogeochemistry, or related field. Fieldwork and laboratory experience.
