This branch is responsible for traffic administration, roadway illumination, roadway traffic signage, project signing, traffic control signals, pavement markings, traffic safety and guide rails and railway crossing maintenance. This branch also administers the annual traffic calming program (i.e., speed cushions), and reviews the collision database for all reported collisions in Barrie. In addition to traffic duties, this branch is also responsible for all Right-of-Way activities, including issuing municipal consents and Right-of-Way Activity permits, conducting Right-of-Way Activity inspections where required, and taking charge of the City's Graffiti Abatement Program. The Corporation of the City of Barrie has a work experience placement opportunity for a student currently enrolled in an Advanced College Program to assist in the Traffic Services Branch of the Development and Traffic Services Department. The Traffic Services Branch of the Development Services Department is responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic systems necessary to keep traffic moving effectively and safely within the City of Barrie. The areas include maintenance and operation of traffic signal systems, traffic signage and operations, illumination systems, and right of way activities. Responsibilities Administering Contracts Traffic Signal Maintenance Contract, Central Traffic System etc. Traffic Signal System Monitoring. Operational Analysis of Intersections. Contractor Audits. Asset Management for Streetlight and Traffic System Elements. Public Surveys and Report Writing. Education (degree/diploma/certifications) Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized College or University * Completed at least one (1) year of a related post-secondary education program at a recognized College or University Enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program, preferably enrolled in a Civil Engineering Technology Program or a closely related Civil program, and returning to full-time studies *Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year Knowledge/Skill/Ability Basic engineering, survey and drafting skill. Strong computer skills; including a good working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office and AutoCad. Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills Willing to work outside Well-organized self-starter with the ability to work well without close supervision. Conditions of Employment Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers Licence in good standing with reliable vehicle to use on corporate busines (travel reimbursement will be provided). CSA Approved Safety Footwear in good condition. Satisfactory Criminal Record Check * *Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy . Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement. Other Important Information Work Term: 8 Months - May - December 2026 Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive N, Barrie, Ontario Hours: The normal hours of work are 35hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
