Organizational Description: The Manitoba Down Syndrome Society is a non-profit organization that provides support, information and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome, parents, professionals and other interested persons.Volunteer Opportunity DetailsVolunteer Opportunity ID: 6036Description of Duties: MDSS Active Youth Program is designed to help youth with Down syndrome aged 9 to 17 build physical literacy skills, develop confidence in sport and recreation, and make meaningful connections with peers.As a volunteer in the Active Youth Program, you will support children and youth with Down syndrome in participating in inclusive, fun, and engaging recreational activities. Volunteers help foster a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment that promotes physical activity, social development, and confidence-building.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist program participants during physical activities, games, and group eventsHelp with set-up and clean-up of program materials and spacesPromote positive peer interactions and inclusive participationSupport individual needs while respecting independence and ability levelsMaintain a safe and supportive environment for all participantsWork collaboratively with MDSS staff and other volunteersReport any concerns or incidents to the Program Coordinator promptlySkills Required:Enthusiastic, compassionate, and reliableComfortable engaging with children and youth of all abilitiesAble to follow directions and adapt to changing needsPrior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is an asset, but not requiredMust complete MDSS volunteer orientation and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (if over 18)Skills Gained/Related Careers:Age: 16-17, 18-30, 31-54Time Commitment: Evening, WeekendProgram DatesOctober 3rd 2025, 6pm-8pmDecember 19th 2025, 6pm-8pmJanuary 30th 2026, 6pm-8pmFebruary 20th 2026, 6pm-8pmMarch 20th 2026, 6pm-8pmApril 17th 2026, 6pm-8pmLocation of volunteer opportunity: Winnipeg - Assiniboine SouthDoes opportunity require a criminal record check?
