Associate Director, Experiential Learning and Professional Development Employee Status: Salaried – Student Management, Level D; Staff – Non Union. Job Summary: Applied Science Central Student Services is a shared‑service unit across the Faculty of Applied Science (APSC), dedicated to providing consistent academic, career, and professional development support for students. The Associate Director leads strategic planning, human resources, financial planning, operations, and policy/program development for a portfolio that supports over 15 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs, serving more than 5,000 students. The role ensures the success of co‑operative education, experiential learning, and career development initiatives, including the APSC Co‑op Program and Engineering Design Teams. Responsibilities Strategically lead the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of co‑operative education, experiential learning, and professional development programming. Oversee strategic planning, development, and evaluation of the Applied Science Co‑op and Professional Development programs, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities. Design evidence‑based, inclusive, and responsive programs, addressing barriers to employment for equity‑deserving student groups. Manage workplace safety, employment equity, and confidentiality concerns for all APSC Co‑op students on placement. Lead the implementation of short and long‑term strategies for career initiatives and strategic partnerships. Advise senior leadership on career and student engagement matters impacting undergraduate and graduate programs. Lead assessment and evaluation processes for continuous program improvement using data, metrics, and stakeholder feedback. Develop the APSC Engineering Design Team framework to support experiential learning across disciplines. Prepare planning documents, annual reports, and outcome analyses for accountability and transparency. Establish objectives, manage outcomes, allocate resources, and coach team members to achieve portfolio goals. Recruit, develop, evaluate, and coach senior staff; address performance issues and ensure effective staffing practices. Lead training and capacity‑building initiatives for the team, championing staff wellbeing and an inclusive work environment. Manage annual and long‑term budgets, including development of program/unit budgets and monitoring of revenue and commitments. Represent the Faculty at university, provincial, national, and international committees related to career education, co‑operative education, and work‑integrated learning. Serve as the Faculty’s representative on the UBC Co‑op Council, contributing to institution‑wide planning and coordination. Lead cross‑campus and inter‑faculty initiatives impacting the Co‑op and PD portfolio. Collaborate with internal partners to expand co‑curricular experiential learning opportunities across UBC. Participate in university‑level committees and administrative structures to inform development and implementation of academic and career development programming. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Respect for diverse perspectives, including those in conflict with one’s own. Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree preferred. Prior higher education leadership experience. Experience designing and delivering complex programs, including evaluation and measurement of effectiveness. Experience developing and executing strategic plans, resource models, and reports. Experience conducting risk assessments, trend analyses, and service delivery reviews. Experience with career and/or leadership and professional development. Outstanding developmental student advising skills and success in teaching and developing staff. Deep, masterful knowledge of learning pedagogy and practice. Leadership experience with the ability to build programs and execute strategic plans in higher education. Strong delegation, motivation, and coaching skills; excellent oral and written communication in English. Teamwork skills and ability to develop effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and community members. Ability to manage complexity within a multi‑faceted work environment focused on broad student outcomes.
