Base pay range

CA$140,000.00/yr - CA$165,000.00/yr

Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to lead their financial and accounting team with a commitment to excellence, service, and accountability. Reporting directly to the Managing Partner and working in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the financial integrity of the firm and fostering a collaborative work environment. The Director of Finance will have two direct reports and work closely with the legal support staff to oversee billing practices, with a particular focus on trust accounting and billable hours management.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Accounting Policies & Procedures: Direct and implement the firm's accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, recommending improvements to ensure the integrity of financial information.
  • Year-End Processes: Manage year-end financial processes, including preparation of financial statements, reconciliations, partnership income allocation, and coordination with independent auditors.
  • Licensing & Insurance Compliance: Ensure compliance with licensing and insurance requirements, including payments and internal recording.
  • Third-Party Relationships: Manage relationships with banks and third-party vendors, including contract negotiations and implementation.
  • Cash Flow & A/R: Monitor cash flow and accounts receivable, ensuring sufficient liquidity and supervising A/R collections processes.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present financial reports, including weekly cash flow, monthly A/R analysis, productivity reports, and quarterly budget progress.
  • Tax Compliance: Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations, manage tax planning efforts, and make recommendations to the partnership.
  • Supervision: Supervise the Accounting Clerk and Office Coordinator, providing financial and accounting assistance.
  • Financial Leadership: Lead, mentor, and train the finance, accounting, and billing teams, promoting a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Trust Accounting: Oversee trust accounting processes, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
  • Billable Hours Management: Accurately track and report billable hours, maintaining detailed records and ensuring timely invoicing.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support financial strategies through budgeting, forecasting, and evaluating results.
  • Contribute to organizational and operational strategies by evaluating trends and providing insights.
  • Analyze expense trends and recommend cost-saving measures.
  • Develop and present cost-benefit analyses for new services.
  • Maintain stability by enforcing ethical business practices and inspiring service excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in accounting and financial management within a law firm in Ontario.
  • Strong knowledge of financial principles, practices, and regulations, including year-end financial statements and trust accounting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-starter with problem-solving skills and initiative.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, advanced Excel skills, and familiarity with financial software.
