Principal Engineering Manager – Microsoft Join us as a Principal Engineering Manager in the Viva Engage team. Viva Engage (formerly Yammer) connects people through communities, bringing leaders and employees together to share knowledge, clarify priorities, and build relationships. Engineers in this role develop services that power all our experiences and tackle large‑scale conversation challenges across tens of millions of users. As a Principal Engineering Manager, you will lead and manage a team of engineers throughout the entire software lifecycle, delivering highly available products and services on schedule. The day‑to‑day responsibilities include technical leadership, people management, and partnership skills. Our technology stack includes Linux on Azure, GraphQL API gateway, Postgres, CosmosDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, Java, Ruby on Rails services, Docker containers, Mesos and Kubernetes, with observability via Grafana, Azure Data Explorer, React, Redux, and Relay. Responsibilities Build, develop, grow and lead a team of engineers. Lead the vision, strategy and execution for the Storyline and Corporate Communications platform. Drive adoption and impact of Engage and its integrations across Microsoft 365. Partner with other Engineering teams, Product, Data Science & Analytics stakeholders to drive strategic decisions and execution excellence. Provide oversight, accountability and leadership for technical architecture and decisions. Oversee timely delivery of high‑quality solutions that meet customer needs and product strategy. Foster a culture that drives engineering excellence, motivating the team to improve reliability, performance, security, stability and architectural quality. Embody Microsoft’s culture and values. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience, coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python or equivalent. 2+ years of people‑management experience. Other Requirements Must meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements, including regular Microsoft Cloud background checks. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Azure cloud offerings such as Azure Postgres, Azure Cosmos DB. Analytical skills for designing highly scalable, reliable services and end‑to‑end scenarios. Ability to communicate technical details clearly and drive complex projects across boundaries. Experience owning 24x7 cloud services with high availability. Experience hiring, managing, and coaching high‑performing engineering teams. Experience building and shipping production‑grade products with high quality.
